Flooring Living Rooms Building a Home

which flooring?

We are about to start renovating a small barn which will be an annexe to the house. there will be one 30 square metres room downstairs which will act as a living dining space with a kitchen corner. we are looking for the right floor - on a budget - I like the shape of flag stones in a light colour ( I don't want grey or multicolored earthy tones as too dark or busy). but when it comes to choosing the type of flooring what are your thoughts between limestone or porcelain tiles that look like stone? or else?
I would like a floor that is easy to clean and not a flat, modern colour, a tile which has a little texture.

I guess a fresh country look is what I am after.

I’m a great fan of porcelain tiles. They are easy to look after, just a quick hoover and mop. There are many that mimic natural stone, but without the maintenance. Limestone is porous so will need sealing periodically which is a bit of a faff. I wanted slate on my kitchen floor but again it is porous and I decided on slate effect porcelain and I don’t regret my decision. Here’s some limestone effect porcelain tiles.

Hi Isabelle,

I have used a lovely porcelain tile to get the same effect as limestone before , they have a nice texture to bring some character to the design.

Pictured below there were from topps tiles (let me know if you want me to dig out the product detail) and I would recommend them as an alternative to limestone! Sounds perfect for your barn too.

These are cool and rustic in the natural daylight, but they still feel warm in the evening in artificial lighting.

Hi snan - to address your questions: 1 - yes, the lamps work very well. With regard to the height of the larger lamps: do you know how high they would be? If the bottom of the lampshade is even with the top of the pillows that should work. If they are taller than that I think you will be okay with the smaller lamps. Look back again at some of the pictures above to see what I mean. The thing that will look odd would be if the top of the lamps were taller than your headboard. The idea is that when you are in bed reading a book that you want the light to be able to reflect down. As far as the lampshade size goes on the smaller lamps I'm thinking the shorter ones since they don't seem to drop down as far as the larger ones. 2 & 3-Definitely chair by the mirrored bedside locker with one white locker on the other side. Without question. The chair to the left of the bed gave the room life. Use the extra white one in a closet or another room. You don't want to overcrowd your room when you are going for a tranquil setting. 4-Absolutely okay to have bedside tables that don't match and look good in the room. Whether or not you like that is a personal preference though. I would only put the mirrored one next to the bed though if you have the chair next to it. It's how they play off each other that makes it work. If you don't keep the chair next to the bed then I would use both white tables beside the bed. It is also fine that the pictures are off-centre to the wall as long as they are centered to the bed. :)

Very nice table. Love it I can't give any help on colors as I can't determine what the colors are on my cheap PC. I did hear that Green is supposed to be the new color of the year though. Not sure I'm liking that so much. It's one of my favorite colors, however it is ssssooooooooooooooo hard to use. Too many shades

I have a dark velvet navy sofa and chair arriving i have warm wood on the floor i would like a rug i don't know whether to go for a neutral rug or a rug with navy and mustard and gold in it as i am getting navy and gold cushions i am so not sure of what would look right in the room i don't want it too busy it has too be just right with the colours

Hi Isabelle,

The design and finish of porcelain tiles have come such a long way in recent years, so you can now get some very convincing tiles that are very difficult to distinguish whether they're stone or porcelain! They're perfect if you want the look of stone without the ongoing maintenance.
