Renovating Design Dilemma DIY

design help would really appreciate it

Looking to redesign the floor layout as the space doesn’t work for us the kitchen and living room currently split into two levels with dead space on top kitchen never been used and another dead space next to breakfast bar we currently use the second reception room for dining room just really stuck and would appreciate any feedback!

I think I'd go for extending the Lounge 2 or 3 of feet into the Family room, and incorporate the Dining room into the kitchen (on one level if possible), maybe changing what looks like it might be a door into a window so you could go right across the back wall with worktop / base units, so that you could have an Island or bijou table and chair set in there too.

Do you use the Garage to put cars in btw?

This looks the perfect candidate for our concept planning service. The garage might be a bit tight to park in, unless you have a soft top and climb out ? So, could that be incorporated into living space too ???

Ok, first of all I think we have very similar tastes because I looked at the pics you tagged in your idea books, but this layout is not efficient at all. your working triangle is non existent and I think there is way too much crowded in one corner. The island is staring out into nothing, and definitely needs to be rotated 90 degrees and I think the shape looks like something you would see in a bar. I am currently doing my own kitchen in two shades of painted cabinetry and will post my drawings and actual images, and then some images that you might like. I think the sink and DW need to be in the island. The fridge needs to be integrated to avoid this much stainless steel since you clearly like a more eclectic, non modern look, and the hood can be more elaborate. I personally think a 48" range with a dramatic hood on that back will with the island turned the correct way will be a nice focal point for your kitchen. You could also do a microwave drawer in your island, that way you only see the range from the front. Also, where is your pantry? Where are you storing food? The second image is a range hood you will probably like The third and fourth are drawings of my kitchen, and the first is a painted on painted kitchen with whimsy you might like. I will attach photos of my project on an additional feed since 4 photos is the limit.

Hi PCmom, sstarr and lefty47. Thanks a million for the comments and views. I'm taking it all on board. PCmom I like the frosted glass idea but I think it will block too much light. We are actually thinking of doing this though in our front sitting room as the window is floor to ceiling. Love the recycled lumber idea and it looks great in the photo - think my husband is hell bent on steel shelving though. sstarr - I'm gonna have a look at your profile pics now but I don't think we will have enough wall space for floor to ceiling pantry. lefty47 we are keeping the appliances for now. It is only the oven - its not the prettiest but its functional and we will most definitely get a new fitted one in the future. There are a few other pictures there of the room around and the left wall - can you not see them? If not I can try and add them again. I'm glad you liked the toilet paper. It took me ages to decide where to place that! What does everyone think about colours of the cabinets? I think we might go for a neutral tone on the wall (unless anyone can visualise anything better?) and either with the steel shelving or possibly the recycles ,lumber idea from PCmom? I agree with 'Kitchens and Baths', you are leaving yourself precious little counterspace to accommodate 2 side-by-side wall ovens? Can't you stack them if you need 2? Also, a warning, I wouldn't be taking anything out of those ovens and "turning to the island" with them...not with a quartz countertop!! You'll have that whole end all scorched...unless you are quick and accurate with lots of trivets! But your "open shelving" is going to look like a pinched-in forgotten corner pantry...you really need more space for them too , if it is going to look right. Right now as it is, 2 feet of them are all but beyond reach (over the lower countertop) and then a mere 2 feet worth of actually OPEN, available space you can reach, then the monster of the floor to ceiling cabinet will be in the way. It will be like reaching around into a closet. I would seriously reconsider this design BEFORE your electrician shows up--and before you order all those (expensive!) cabinets. But as for the island 'crowding' the walkway--it looks as if your drawing says 1.2 meters? That's plenty and more than enough, even for running boisterous kiddos, you're fine there. Best of Luck.

Kitchen is actually not a bad size, considering that you have the dining room and that it is the size of some modern kitchen diners. I think some of your cabinets are retro in a good way, maybe not the three quarter height one but the uppers and sliders under the sink are interesting. Could you see them in 50s retro mint green with olive walls or say duck egg blue units and walls and hints of pink or red here and there in the kitchen? You could have them resurfaced by an auto paint company in any colour you like. At the very least don't rip them out and skip them, somebody will love them, they are very in in certain circles.

Am assuming you don't use the garage to park a car in, but still need garage space for storing bikes and stuff - so keep the front half of the garage as bike/storage space and then incorporate the back of the garage into the house and knock through from the kitchen. move the toilet into the middle of the house and also create a utility room there. That leaves the whole of the back of the house for kitchen/dining and leaves the Family Room as a snug/family room and the Lounge as proper front room (one of these rooms could also be a kids playroom, depending on ages of kids and how much separation they need). Glass doors can be added to the Family Room to separate it more but still be visible and let light into it.
