If you are after a more modern and fresh look, I definitely agree removing the current fireplace and surround is a good idea. I am not sure if that involves the rest of the stonework along the wall and the TV area? If it is possible to remove these that is really going to help as well. If not no worries - I can show you how to update them later on.
I also suggest changing the carpets and curtains to get away from the beige. They do look very 70s indeed! I would even go as far as painting the walls and giving your living room a fresh look altogether. If you are removing the fire sound, you may need to change the carpets anyway? Not sure but just wanted to throw it out there!
Ok in terms of the stonework along the walls - if you can't remove them or its too costly the alternative is to paint it white, something like this:
