Help needed! What colour curtains?

We are looking to get some curtains for the bay window in our living room which is north facing. It’s a knocked through lounge and the window at the other end of the room is south / south east facing. So still quite a bright room. Had thought possibly paprika or an ash rose but very open to suggestions.

Also any ideas of how to decorate the fireplace very welcome. The picture above the sofa isn’t staying

Love your bookcases and like the picture too. I would keep your curtains neutral, that is of a similar shade to your walls. Doesn’t have to be an exact match, just a similar tone. I’m not keen on strong colours on curtains. Taupe is a very elegant shade which, I think, will look classy and tie in with your sofa and wall colour nicely. You can then add texture and colour with cushions and wall art. You could paint your fireplace to give it a more modern look? Something like this

Hi Laura, I'm not a massive fan of the bold curtain colours I think it will take away your focus from the rest of the room. I would suggest either a dark velvet blue or possibly a patterned curtain would work.

As for the fireplace, it would look great to create a nice little gallery wall above with vases and accessories on the fireplace.

I think your colors are restful so I would work with those and not pop a color. Maybe some interesting artwork that had some color in it, but I think you should go for a more elegant calm look. By the way, I like the chandelier you have with the fireplace. I think I would paint the lower part of your wall the same blue as is in the top part. Then I would add some black accents in glass and lamps. Curtains that have a sheen or gold thread would be nice.

Your tile looks like it might have a bit of a soft gray/olive green in it so I'd go with a light olive green. Here are some color ideas as the page you posted isn't big enough for me to really see the colors.

Gorgeous sofas! Would you consider using the Thibaut print suggested by Judy G Designs in a soft fold Roman shade? You don't say how many windows there are in the room. But Straight edge on the bottom, outside mount, clean and simple. The print has enough activity.

Hello there... I hope I can be of some help as I have almost an identical sitting room - I will just share with you my sitting room this year!! All the walls started out in Dulux Timeless colour so I wanted to add an accent colour- like you, I have one end of the room that is patio doors. So the opposite wall to those, I chose as an accent wall - I know a lot of people suggest not having an accent wall but perhaps having horizontal painted stripes of colour etc... But as I was doing the painting, I knew I would have made a real hash of that!! So the third pic is my first attempt at an accent wall - The Greene Paint company - colour Bassalt. This was nice but I just got bored of it - it worked well against the richness of the wood floor etc and was very much a statement but in a few months I just couldn't settle with it. After several coats of white I have now settled on Farrow & Balls colour Lamp Room Grey. I know this seems all very neutral, but from the second photo you will see I have gone for cream curtains with neutral vertical pom-poms - but, by doing all this, I can now change the accent colour in this room at the drop of a hat and quite importantly - INEXPENSIVELY! For instance, if I wanted to, for Xmas, if I was going to spend a lot of time in that room, I could a. Go for red and cream cushions and create a Scandinavian look! Or b. Go for silver beaded cushions and silver candle jars and have a winter wonderland look! And equally in the summer, I could go for pastel pink floral cushions and a vase of delicate roses to bring the garden into the sitting room or just keep it neutral with ivory roses and a hint of lime green. So my advice would be to keep the expensive things neutral and then you can alter the in expensive things as you go along. I also think one expensive piece in any room is a good investment - be it a huge oversized pewter bowl or a something similar - that again is neutral in colour but is a statement piece. White shutters would look good on that window. If you want to experiment with colours, Ikea has this playful fabric. The blue one is already curtains, the orange one is a fabric.

Thank you for the advice, it’s been much appreciated. I think we will go down the neutral route and save pops of colours for accessories

Hi Laura, if you look at our first photo. the carpet, sofa and walls are all quite similar and curtains too similar may look a bit flat. I had this problem in my East facing lounge. I like your colour ideas, maybe you could find a fabric that incorporates some colour in a subtle way. Ida and Ina do some lovely subtle fabrics and make curtains. If you do for for a neutral curtain, try to make sure it is the same 'colour' as the sofa/carpet and either darker or lighter.
