Living room layout help needed!
We have a fairly large living room whigh goes across the back of our house. It used to be a lounge diner but we have a separate dining room now so we use it as just a living room.
We have sliding patio doors facing out to the garden
on one side and a door to the hall on the opposite side.
We currently have a corner sofa and a three seater sofa but I can’t seem to arrange it so that it looks right! I’ve thought about having two separate seating areas but I’d still like the room to “flow” if you know what I mean, any advice would be much appreciated.

4 years agoHi Bev, the measurements are not completely accurate. can you measure the the longest width of the room too, please.
you could put a tv over the fire and add low back sofas across the room opposite the wall with the fire. then add some bookshelves and two occasional chairs on the opposite side. can be used as a reading area of take a part in watching the tv too

Need help with awkward living room layout
Comments (3)I disagree with the above comments. If you're open to big changes, especially if you plan on replacing the fireplace, you could install a lower mantle, and install the TV above it on a swing arm. This way, the TV and fireplace will remain the focus in the centre of the room, while still being able to view the TV wherever you deem most comfortable on any given day. I think the oblong shape of the room would allow for a couple different seating arrangements. Looking at the second image (fireplace on the right), imagine a compact love seat with it's back facing the double doors. Across from the love seat, 2 accent chairs, backs facing the photographer. Add a coffee table of your choice, and you now have a conversation space in front of the fireplace that is also ideal for watching TV. Thinking about the space behind the love seat, closest to the double doors; a half-height, full-width bookshelf would be lovely along the right wall (left of the fireplace), or even a cushioned bench seat with storage underneath, or both! One orientation to the right of the fireplace, and one to the left. Behind the love seat you could place a console table with lamps and accent decor that would create a visual division, making each seating area seem more intimate and purposeful. Comments (7)Hi Emmeline. Have measured as best I could. The room is 9ft wide and 18ft long going right up to the bay window sill.Imagine you are standing in the doorway. The door opens inwards and to the left. The space between the open door frame and the wall perpendicular i.e. facing the bay window is approx 2ft. On that perpendicular wall are cubes for art work, a tv and a flat chrome edged gas fire. The fire is 1ft of the ground.. The cube unit is 2ft off the ground as is the tv. So not much space to play around with there. Still standing in the doorway on the wall to your right is a longish radiator. At a slight diaganonal opposite you is a window. Height from floor is 2ft6in. Length of window is 3ft Distance ofrom fire place wall to window is 8ft4in. . Distance from end of window to alcove wall of bay window is 3ft2in. There are two small alcove wall each 2ft6in in length. The bay window is a square shape rather than curved. The length is 4ft. Depth 3ft. Height 2ft.6in.from floor. We moved house recently so the furniture does not really fit the space. I would like to keep the sofa if possible. It is a standard shape with rounded arms and very comfortable. It is a 2 and 1/2 seater approx 5ft 8in long and 3ft high. In an ideal world I'd like 1920s 30s or mid century scandanavian. But would also like to keep the sofa. The only thing I can think of doing is put the sofa facing the fire and take it from there. What about a window seat which would also provide storage? If the sofa faces the fire what do I do with the rest of the room? Chair angled at small window... ottoman??? As for colours the room is painted chalk white. When you come in the front door ( 1930s with coloured glass) there is a curved polished plaster wall in burnt umber. So am thinking moss green, mustard i.e autumn colours a la Orla Kiely??? Comments (0)Hi, We have bought a new house and can't decide on the layout of the sitting room and was looking for some help. There is an electric fireplace integrated into the middle of the center wall and two alcoves on either side. I don't want to mount the TV above the fireplace as it will be too high so am wondering what is the best room layout and TV position. There is also a bay window at the front. 4 years agoYou also could put the tv on the wall with the sliding door slightly blocking the patio door, but obviously it would depend on which way the door opens

4 years agolast modified: 4 years agoThank you, E D. The tv is in the corner right now and it looks bit awkward to me there, because of the fireplace and the position of the sofa. I think if you put it on a low tv cabinet, it shouldn’t block too much of the patio door. The door is quite large. It would be good if Bev could move the furniture around just to see if it would work. I like the first one tbh, it has more potential: more people can sit watch tv but also is quite social too Thiis Ikea Vallentuna modular sofa with storage would be quite good 260 cm x 193cm

4 years agothere are many options, really, what you can do with your room. you'd need to think what you like to do and how you normally use the space. i think the best way is to go two zones route.
