Starting a home renovation - living room question

Hi there,

I own a home in Dublin 8 that needs a significant upgrade.

Decision 1: There is a separate kitchen, dining room and living room. I plan to extend out and bring the kitchen and dining room into one open plan room, however unsure of whether to carry on and connect the living room. I like the idea of having lots of people over so the space would be great, but family think I shouldn't do that as would lose the 'cosy' feel of the front room. Which I also love!

Anyone done this and delighted/regretted it?

Hi Clodagh, I also spent a lot of time deciding whether to keep living room separate and in the very end I got builder to put in the wall. Glad now. It was hard to find places to set furniture. And there is somewhere quiet and cosy to go.

Also depends on size of each of the rooms. If all small then maybe open/broken plan is a good idea.

Do you have floor plans to upload?

Thank you for commenting. I was hoping to place double doors /pocket doors between the kitchen and living room that I could open or close off particularly in the depths of winter. I like my heat. Doing that leaves me with less wall space for kitchen units particularly the American style fridge freezer but something has to give. The back wall of the house opens/or rather doesn't open to the garden at the moment but I would like it to do so. So nothing unusual here, I just want a kitchen /diner / utility that opens onto the garden for outside entertainment, but I think my main struggle is with the length and narrowness of the room. I'm finging it really hard to visualise a functional working space.

Thanks, is the light bouncing off it? I would go with the yellow as your accent in small doses. Bright yellow is obviously in fashion at the moment but could be expensive to replace when out of fashion so stick to cushions etc. you could do the walls in a light grey as it looks as if they could take it and choose navy or purple as your secondary colour (or turquoise/teal would work as above) for cushions, rug, accessories etc or even try a feature wallpaper. These are fairly classical colours so won't date. Try lamps etc in classical shapes (urns, ginger jars etc) so you can just change the shade when needed

Large chimney breast, how to finish living room?

Hi all, We are in the process of renovating a 1980's two storey house. I'm looking at the large living room at the moment, the chimney breast has been blocked and we plan to break it back out and add a stove. See pictures of the room as is below: Room Size: The chimney breast is very wide and quite shallow so I am not sure how best to finish it without the stove looking lost.... We will be putting down new white skirting and architraves. Going with dark walnut wood flooring. Some styles we've been looking at: Any thoughts what would work here?
