A big blank white wall...... inspiration needed!!!
We had an open plan extension completed last year with the usual island/ bifold/ dining space at one end and a TV area at the other.
The space is amazing but I am now left with a pretty big, blank wall that I have absolutely no idea what to do with?! It now feels more urgent since the tree and Christmas decorations came down and the room feels utterly bare!!
I am not great with design and decorating and can’t seem to get started with it?? Does anyone have any suggestions or examples of things you have done to give me some much needed inspiration?!
The wall faces the kitchen (which is Stiffkey Blue and White)...... in case that makes a difference?!

Comments (20)I agree deepen the color, don't change it and yes art art art! maybe lessen the presence of the brick with the earlier suggestion of the metal cogs its and use traditional artwork pics/nature/paintings on the painted wall. I also like the idea to paint the part of the wall that juts out in a darker shade of the same color. Now you have lots to consider and lots to dismiss as well. Comments (10)Hi Maria. It's a lovely kitchen and I must admit I like the white so would probably change the accessories. I would add a huge sunburst clock or mirror above the cabinets (can't work out if it's a clock or mirror above the fire). Add a statement light over the table. Try a coloured splashback behind the cabinets. Add some coloured stools. I would say paint the kitchen chairs but I can see they are good quality! If you do want to paint then either blues, violets or even a very soft grey if you add some coloured accesories. Comments (10)I have to agree with nudejude regarding the upholstered furniture sizes and positions. The room looks long and narrow, so placing 2 chairs or a 2 seater sofa opposite another 2 seater would allow you to enter through the door and walk, unrestricted, through to the opposite end of the room. An area rug between the sofas, large enough to fit under their front legs and perhaps a clear coffee table in glass or Perspex between would make a great conversation area. There may be enough length to the room to use a console table behind the sofa nearest the double doors with 2 small occasional chairs. A pair of lamps would provide light for the sofa and for the chairs. If the chairs are needed, they can be brought into the main conversation grouping. A Roman blind, with or without the curtains, would set off the window. Throw cushions in a variety of patterns and colour, will add interest to the upholstered pieces. 4 years agoDepending on the rest of the room: you could break up the long stretch of wall with a tall (display) cabinet. A large piece of art or a shelf with different frames perhaps?

DecorMatter app works like a photoshop and easy to use. for paint colour most of paint websites have a paint visualiser apps

It is not too much space for any shelves on the wall next to the dining table. I'd put something slim, like a sticker or a gallery of prints and photos.

4 years agoMy sister has just put up this gorgeous Harlequin wallpaper of hummingbirds in her open plan kitchen, which is very similar to your kitchen. She too felt the room needed zoning and cosying up. She chose the first silver based one, but I do rather like the dark one for impact. I also like Marina’s navy wall with that lovely map. Some amazing ideas here!

4 years agoI've been toying with the idea of doing this to my blank office wall and painting it either the same colour as the walls or gold against a dark blue wall. Just throwing it into all the other suggestions:-)

4 years agoI would star looking into the tv / sting nook. I would hang either very light floral, chevron or geometric wallpaper or use a stencil to paint a pattern on the wall with three door. To take the attention away from the doors. Then I’d add a chair in the corner to the left of the tv with an Ikea Hektar floor lamp. and add an Ikea glass and meal VITTSJÖ shelving unit. Black metal of the shelving and the lamp would go well with your counter lights and the bar stools. The design is light and won’t block any natural lighting to the tv area. I’d also add a light flatwoven rug. After that I would continue to the dining area. I don’t think you need to much on that wall. The kitchen is very focal and visible, the colour scheme, the lights etc. I think you can add a few large prints on that wall.

4 years agolast modified: 4 years agoIt's a lovely room. I get your thinking for the doors as it would look like art but not convinced it really works and practically might not be easy to keep? You would need to paper the sides of the doors or presumably the edges may come away and then cover in some form of decorators varnish I'd have thought otherwise it may get filthy quickly? I really like Patrina's idea or a more traditional panelling may work with hidden doors and would sit well with the style. It would be interesting to know wall and door dimensions as you may be able to have a 5 panel configuration. It would look great in the inky blue.
You mentioned you loved travel so you could add vintage posters of where you've been (or want to!) and mix with family holiday photos and anything you've brought back from travels that's suitable for wall hanging. You'd be able to update it periodically too so shouldn't tire of it!
i agree re rug and chair too and maybe a small table of sorts. I think the length off the tv unit is fine, you could actually go a bit longer but wonder how the height works for tv viewing?

I had thought a chaise to help section it off, but maybe better to stick with a longer sofa and add an armchair on the other side to break it up
i have found a wallpaper I like based on inspiration from here..... so at least I have a starting point now and then going to experiment with some art work and a shelving unit along the long wall

4 years agoSome friends of ours have an entire wall of storage behind flush doors. They have painted a Mondrian inspired design to highlight yet disguise the doors.

4 years agoNice wallpaper. Tonje Bjerknes posted this picture on her FB profile, I thought you might like it. You said you you had a metallic map somewhere. Maybe worth putting it up, it might have a nice subtle effect without the wall being dark.

4 years agoHow about a gallery wall, or slim shelf (£8 from Ikea) to prop pictures on so you can change them as the mood takes you. This is mine in my similarly long extension with bifolds at one end.
