Electric Underfloor Heating in a bedroom

Hello fellow renovating tribe

Wondered if anyone might have an opinion on this. We are trying to determine a heating solution for our bedroom. We think a curved radiator would be too expensive (bespoke made) so we're thinking electric UFH might be a good way to go (we realise it can be a little bit pricier to run but more on that below).

Here are requirements:

- Floor size 15m2

- Large curved bay window

- Cavity wall insulated

- Currently bare floorboards

- Want to fit Quick Step flooring (either wood or laminate)

We are noobs to underfloor heating so there is one question left to answer and would be grateful for any pointers from those who have electric UFH in a bedroom:

Does having UFH in our bedroom seem like a good idea? We do not want to keep the underfloor heating on all day as clearly it is expensive to do so and there's little point heating a bedroom when we aren't in it. Would an electric system provide enough heat if we were to heat the room for a couple of hours in the morning and same again in the evening? Thoughts are that if we put the device on timer then this would be not far off having a radiator blasting out whenever our central heating is on.

Any advice is very much appreciated!

Hi Fifi,

I haven't used UFH in a bedroom before, but I wouldn't be put off by the idea at all. I have USED electric UFH in a very large kitchen diner on a ground floor to replace all radiators. Although it's not something I would normally recommend (without a radiator in such a large space), there has been no issues with heating at all. I was very impressed.

As you say, you can programme it to come on as and when you need.

Also, is your bedroom on the first floor? If so you will naturally get some heat coming up from the ground floor.

Electric underfloor is obviously relatively expensive to run. You can put it on a timer but underfloor takes a long time to heat up so not hugely controllable. Our curved radiators cost between £800 to £1200 but may work out more cost effective in the longer term. We regularly fit these systems on the houses we do as well as solar panels especially on new builds. we are not a solar company but always advise our customers on these option as they can save you a great deal of money as well as a tax free income. Air source heat pumps Like ground source heat pumps, air-to-water ASHPs work better with underfloor heating systems. If underfloor heating is not possible, large radiators should be used. This is because the heat generated by the heat pump is not as high as that produced by a conventional boiler, so a larger surface area is needed to achieve similar temperatures in your home. Air-to-water heat pumps could be better suited to new-build properties than retrofit - this is because costs could be reduced if the heat pump is included as part of the building specification, rather than having to retrofit underfloor heating later on. Heat pumps can save you more on your heating bills if you're replacing an electric, oil, LPG or coal system, rather than gas. A well-insulated house is essential to best optimise the heat generated by your ASHP - otherwise the heat the pump is generating escapes more easily. Once in place, the heat pump should require little maintenance. Air-to-water heat pumps qualify for the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI). Air source heat pump costs and savings ASHPs are cheaper than ground source heat pumps. The Energy Saving Trust (EST) estimates that the cost of installing a typical ASHP system ranges between £7,000 and £11,000. The payback period (the time taken to recoup the cost of the system in energy savings) depends on how efficiently your system works, the type of system you're replacing, whether you can get money with the RHI and how you'll be using the heat generated from the pump. The EST says that an average performing air source heat pump in an average four-bedroom detached home could save: between £360 to £555 a year if replacing oil (non-condensing) between £1,200 and £1,805 a year if replacing LPG (non-condensing) between £715 and £1,295 a year if replacing electric heating (old storage heaters). Wood Essence Amber is a great product, comes in just few sizes but also in a non slip tile. The tiles in general could be lay on floor boards, not directly. I would lay first a 9-10 mm plywood otherwise the existing boards might move too much creating cracks in the grout, also use flexible tile adhesive specific for wood, I think MAPEI has the best tile adhesive, but that is because I am Italian, sorry. I know KERAKOLL is getting more and more popular as DUNLOP. Best advise ever, do not go for plywood less than 9mm, please! ( I have been convinced by a client, I will never do it again its not worth it ) You might find some fibre cement boards to use specific for this porpoises, there are quite few types around you just need to ask your closest building merchant.

A15) @Dara Cooke: If you can't afford a quartz or granite worktop from day one then I would recommend using a laminate worktop as a temporary solution. If you don't put tiles up as a backsplash then replacing the worktops can be relatively easy in a couple of years.

coming to the end of the thinking stage. Building a house and thinking to put the bedrooms on the ground level with the kitchen and sitting room upstairs to make the best of a wonderful view along with underfloor heating......looking for the bad points on my idea......

we have electric underfloor heating in our kitchen, our snug and in two bathrooms (but not a bedroom). It gives secondary heating. Its nice to walk on a warm floor and if the central heating is off it takes the edge off the cold but there's no way it could replace the radiators in our house.

Don't use wood or laminate with ufh, even if the company says it's ok. It does reduce it's efficiency.

Check out aluminium radiators, they come in narrow vertical types too. We've installed one next to our bathroom window on a 40cm wide wall. Near a window keeps out the cold&moist better (or are you installing triple glazing too?). Best is under the window, for convection, but I understand your round bay makes that challenging?

Personally I'd probably opt for the curved type. You only buy them once.
