Can I install a radiator upside down

I am looking to install a radiator in my extension and the only way I can connect to the central heating pipes is from the floor above. Can I install a tall radiator upside down with pipes on top rather than bottom.

Is the wall already in place? the one in our kitchen has the pipes feeding in from the floor above... however they've run the pipes down inside the wall.. and poked them out at the bottom to fit the rad. I'm with others and don't think installing upside down would work.

If they've said the pipes need to come from above, what have they suggested you do as a solution? surely they already have a plan especially if that's where they're saying the pipes need to come from?

I doubt it - for example how will you bleed it as the bleed valve will be at the bottom so water will rush out. Why can you not connect to the existing ground floor heating pipes?

Hello nicnoll, Another idea could be to have a wall light that is all about the bulb! A few links to both ideas.... Copper is good too... Or you run them in loops across the ceiling to the opposite wall and have a wall light fitting but the electric cable comes from the one ceiling point. So less to do wiring wise.. Yes as long as you vent it out through a flue. You may need to consider other ventilation too. Try the Salamander Hobbit stove, it is DEFRA approved and designed for small spaces. I would definitely recommend that you get a qualified installer to take a look 1st to make sure there is a way to fit the fluand that you have suitable air circulation. Its definitely worth following up on. As a less expensive alternative, the oil filled electric radiators are very effective. Also many conservatories are very cold due to lack of insulation under the floor.. Could this be looked at?

Hi. I don't think a curtain/s in the middle will work as you'll have the radiator either side plus a potential issue with the poles? Why not try Romans (if they fit, as i can't see the inside of the window frame!) and a single curtain either side? Rather than use tiebacks so they're draped across the window just use a holdback similar to the pic so they're held back instead. This one obviously has a pelmet but you could add poles which just overhang the top of the window slightly

www.visioninteriors.ie Looking at your curtains and curtain pole, in my opinion it is the pole that initially needs to be corrected - it is a nice steel pole,however the importance of a pole being fitted correctly makes a huge difference to the hanging and look of the curtains. the brackets at each end of the pole should be at least 8"/20cm away from each sides of the window, this allows the curtains to frame the window nicely while letting in as much light as possible. The brackets should be 2"/5cm away from the finial ( ball end in this case) at each end of the pole. The space between the bracket and the finial (end of the pole) has one curtain ring only and the rest of the curtain rings/hooks are the window side of the brackets so that the curtains can hang straight. Whether you buy new curtains or hold onto your existing ones check out the fitting of the pole and remedy it - you will be amazed at the difference this can make.

We have several radiators in the house with the pipes coming from above, but the radiators are mounted the way they are supposed to be, not upside down.

(all the pipework goes through the ceilings, the house had gas heaters when built and the central heating was installed by previous owners)

All the radiator pipes on my ground floor come from above, down to the radiator the right way up. One lot of pipes in the kitchen are boxed in, the ones in the living room are exposed, but painted the same colour of the walls. The house was built in 1934 without any central heating, so we had to install it.

If anyone is still following this. I've renovated my house more than a year ago and installed a new system myself. Came across the same problem, and despite advice against it I've installed on the ground floor two vertical designer radiators, upside down, fed from above. One year later, and I had zero issues with the heating. Of course you can't use a TRV in this case, cause of it being on the top of radiator it will turn off as soon as the radiator gets warm. I've drained the system recently to add some inhibitor, and the water was crystal clear.
