Sustainable wood worktops

I'm having real trouble sourcing a sustainable breakfast bar worktop of the correct thickness. We've got a carrera worktop, and have a planned wooden section as the breakfast bar. None of the high st kitchen companies seem to have sustainable wood options, and I an only find reclaimed wooden worktops that are a max if 2.7cm thick. Bespoke kitchen companies who use sustainable wood will only supply worktops as a part of a whole kitchen fit.

I really don't want to have an unsustainably sourced piece of worktop, it seems mad that I'd even have to, there must be a solution. Any help gratefully received!

Our carpenter / fitter would fit it for us. Delivery would be to Surrey, postcode KT10.

ms1zebra, Thanks for your comment and interest! River-rock finished aluminum is a great surface. Its unfinished textured top allows for increased durability for work surfaces. It is resilient with heat, stains, oxidation, but will show signs of use if heavy objects are dropped on or slid across it or cutting is done on it with steel knives. As mainly a lighting manufacturer, we do not heavily promote our tile choices, so we haven't made much of an impact on the tile market. Perhaps when folks think of aluminum as a material, they think about unfinished flat aluminum sheet, which is not a good or even available choice for kitchen surfaces. no a gas hob won't damage wood worktops - obviously though - don't put hot pans directly onto a wood surface - or you may get damage ... but you knew that anyway I bet !! :-)

My kitchen was very similar to yours Theresa very dark - needed to leave lights all the time! I got the cabinets professionally painted in an off white by Farrow and ball and the walls are in Bone by farrow and ball which is a kind of grey - sage color. looks and feels way warmer and brighter! Think this could work really well with your wall tiles as they appear to have a green tone in them. Definitely integrate appliance - so glad I got mine painted it feels like a whole new kitchen without the big investment! Best of luck with yours!

Wood at kitchen companies is often expensive (it is where I work). So find some planks yourself.

I've used a 45 year old solid oak table top for our bathroom vanity (my husband ate his first sandwiches on). Sanded it down and put some clear laquer on it. There were probably no trees replanted for the table back then, but repurposed is just about as green as sustainably grown.
