Woodchip & patterned wallpaper - how bad is it?

I don't think there is a single room in this (Colt) house without a type of woodchip, textured or patterned wallpaper. Primarily because the walls are mostly chipboard, and it was my mother's solution for covering unevenness before thicker papers became available.

It's a big house though - 5 bed, 2 large reception, 2 bath - and I can't afford to do every room.

Your opinions please:

- Is there any type which should definitely be removed? E.g. the ones with the bigger chips? Designs/patterned on ceilings?
- Is there any type/design which is acceptable or considered more modern?
- What would you use instead for a neutral decor? Plain?
