levelling floors

Hi, I am currently working on a house that I have bought :) dues to some not so nice glue used back in the 50s we have had to have most of the upstairs flooring ripped out :(

We are left with a rough concrete that we would like to have smooth and level (needs to be raised quite a bit too) - see attached photos

The floors in the different rooms are also not level - I would like them to all be level along with the landing corridor floor (we plan to fit wooden floors in all rooms (including the landing) and tiles in the bathroom)

Can anyone recommend end the best way to achieve this (self-leveling concrete, plywood, etc.)?

Mnn not often you see concrete floors upstairs like this. Of course in a lot of countries Jamaica for example, this is common practice. I think one consideration is the support for the upstairs if this would be sufficient for the weight of additional concrete. You could also consider building up the floor with timber then placing your chosen flooring on top. First though I'd consult a structiral engineer to check everything out.

Thanks a lot for the advice!! We have a structural engineer involved in the project already so ask him. The house is in Germany and was built in the 50s of that helps :) thanks a lot! Jon.

Hi. totally off point but.... Have you ever considered a real interesting eye catching piece of art work to really brighten up this area I think a select piece of art would really make the space stand out, add interest, colour, texture and add a great talking/thinking point to the room.... Laminate flooring widths?

The sizes you mentioned for the flooring: 11mm or 8mm are not "widths" of the plank. It is the THICKNESS of the plank. Technically the thicker the laminate the "nicer" the laminate. Small rooms do well with lighter flooring. And please do not use laminate in the kitchen. It won't survive for very long. If you are going to do it, please purchase enough laminate to REMOVE AND REPLACE the kitchen TWICE. That way you can have the same floor throughout the house even if the kitchen is severely damaged....and the potential is VERY high that laminate in a kitchen will NOT survive a rental situation. Remember: in a rental, the life of a floor = 7 years on average. Laminate in a kitchen averages 3 years. That's why you want to buy enough laminate to install the kitchen TWICE....it's the only way you can get it to "live" for the full 7 years. Have fun.

This is the hall as it looks now, it will be repainted, a radiator cover must be put in place and the wall hangings will be changed. We had been looking at an extra long wide plank beige grey laminate but we've been recommended to go with a solid wood oak herringbone.

Wooden floor, Carpet and tiles???

I think you will need a carpet runner in the hallway to reduce noise from either wood or tile. I would definitely use tile in the kitchen and bathroom, for ease of cleaning. Wearing rubber soled shoes instead of high-heeled shoes or boots indoors will also keep the noise level down.

Ooh I love a good old German home, I lived in Germany for 4 years and certainly the homes I visited and lived in with the similar flooring were solidly built. They even had concrete flooring in the loft space!

I brought up the level of a floor with plywood. Then the layer of foam underlay with a laminate on top. it worked really well. If you were having carpets on top of the ply, I wonder if it would bounce about.

Use Self leveling liquid screed does the job!
