kitchen layout decision before 9 Dec!

Hi I wonder if anybody had any suggestions on layout and style of my kitchen? The room measures 10ft x14ft and these are existing drawings however the soil pipe is being moved marked in green so it will look more open. Any advice welcome thanks.

Alternative layout.

Clockwise starting at the back door: Buffet(-ish) cabinet at max.45cm deep. Pullout larder, shallow tall unit, fridge between panels (with cabinet above), Lemans corner cabinet, 40cm 3 drawer unit, range, 40cm 3 drawer unit, corner cabinet (with shelves), sink, dishwasher, 30cm pullout (trash?) unit.

There’s lots that can be done with a kitchen ... you will be living with it for a long time after - so worth putting a lot of thought into it .

This layout has the fridge as a prominent piece ? Might be better with fridge and a pantry on the right wall instead... also notice open shelving either side of Range cooker - these will be very difficult to keep clean here - I’d suggest cabinets instead. So add a bin pullout cabinet where the fridge was and reconfigure the corners so you have useable corner storage ( bins here would heat up and smell)

Great point about the bins I hadn’t given it a thought! The fridge a retro Smeg is quite bulky and measure 67cm and on the right hand wall we only have 50cm so I don’t think it’s possible without it hanging over the back door? I will definitely try to move the bins!

I've had a look at free offerings for floor planning software. It depends on the level you want to go to. Sweethome3D http://www.sweethome3d.com/ is truly free because it's open source (no fees if you want to draw more than one plan etc). I've found I can get reasonably detailed with it from layout perspective but I doubt it would be good enough for a drawings for a building permit (although I'm not certain of this). As a graphic designer you'll have an affinity for graphics software. If you want to be able to draw more detailed drawings Id take the time to learn Sketchup. I know some architects use this as their software of choice. I'm definitely with you @Jason Carter - the only way to really control your budget is to plan ahead and choose and price everything that you can think of before you break ground. Otherwise you're in a situation where you have to make quick compromises during the build which leads to mistakes etc. In my work we use requirements tracking tools. I think it would be really helpful to communicate to the contractors exactly what is going to go on in the room - why the extra outlets are there and in the position they're in. That way they have a deeper understanding of why the specs are the way they are and they don't make decisions that detract from the design - they might even come up with suggestions that support the ideas behind the designs.

Hi Michele, self build is very exciting and we wish you luck for your upcoming project. We have various tips when it comes to our customers designing their home. As some have suggested above understanding how you and your family occupy the space is fundamental in making those early design decisions. I think it looks great so far. Many of the ads for claw foot tubs, and magazines, show them with encaustic/cement tile and plain white surround. Also, you did something creative and attractive with the tile layout. I love the nickel shine of your clawfoot legs too. If you can maybe get a corner shelf on one side of the wall, you'll have a place for soap, candle or bubble bath. And maybe hotel towel holder on another wall to get the height up. Congratulations and thanks for sharing.

And what appliances will need to go in there? Do you want a range or built in? (because oven with micro requires less space) How are your thoughts on a galley kitchen? How many people in your household?

Hi there thanks for all your input - much appreciated. The cabinets have been chosen, they are by Sebastan Cox in black and natural. I love the Fulham kitchen and also have a smeg fridge. I have considered a built in but not sure if it has the same impact unless it is housed in a tall cabinet but I wanted to stay clear of tall cabinets just to keep it airy looking.

Tall units in a strategic spot make up for 'the loss' of upper cabinets. It's the overall layout that makes a kitchen look airy. For starters, don't place the frigde between a window and door.

make the shallow depth cabinets on right shorter and have fridge on end there - so you can use the side as magnet display? add low cabinet or drawers where fridge was on Rinq's layout.

I know that would be perfect but that is shallow on 50 cm and the fridge is 67 cm and would hang over the door frame!

Another :)

Clockwise starting at the fridge: Drawers, dead corner, 20cm pullout, range (or cooktop and oven), Lemans corner, sink, dishwasher, 80cm drawers. And 2x60cm shallow tall units as pantry. Perhaps a radiator next to the back door, shelf over it, some hooks for towels and apron. The other shelves all have leds built in. Range is offcentre, as the right hand corner will most likely be used most. Countertops are 65cm deep.

I like your kitchen choice with the Sebastian Cox! Is the original design that you posted one that was done by Devol? I don’t have much to add to the discussion apart from I know the kind of look that you’re after. I also get why they have suggested a range - although it seems big for the size of the design. Have you thought about a smaller range? Lacanche have a couple at just 70cm wide so could gain you some space. (small I know!)

Hi Sarah thanks so much for your input and yes the design was done by Devol. I love the range but I am used to 7 burners although I probably used no more than four at any one time! I have a stoves at 120 cm! I will definitely look at the 70 and I love the colours. My kitchen will be blue/black base and natural top cupboards m. My next decision will be what colour cooker or should I stick with stainless steel?

Stainless steel is a safe bet - but black could look good too. What couloir is your fridge? Also thinking - could you move the bin to be in front of the removed soil pipe? I used to have a built in bin but then I lived with it. I’ve now got a freestanding one. I know the built in look is streamlined and lovely - but the practicalities can be tricky especially with recycling etc. (Although it’s probably more the case that we’re just a really messy family!!!)

Oh yes I need to decide on fridge colour as well! I am waiting for the builder to confirm might be able to move soil pipe and then the wall could be flush (fingers crossed) and that is where I would put the built-in bin. At the mo it’s next to the cooker but I’ve been advised on here it might smell - good point! I am very lucky to be getting some help on Houzz thanks everyone! I agree I will probably opt for stainless steel.

The builder came today we have to keep the plinth can’t go all the way back to the wall :( oh well we still gained quite a lot of space.

Hi

Today is the final day to sign off plans I got original date wrong! However, all going well until my daughter mentioned at 12th hour, either substituting a cupboard on the right for a void and using the area as a breakfast bar or overhang the worktop slightly to create an eating area. Would that look too fussy? Would it even work? This really is the very last day to decide!

Don't. I think seats won't fit in this layout.

Where are you thinking of a stool, as I really don't think there is space. If you loose the bin, then yes you could put 1 stool there as long as it pushes tight under the counter but then who would want to sit there as its an odd space to sit and would only get in the way.

A stool on bottom right would block the door on right and if it was more left it would block the way into the kitchen

Thank you for looking into it for me and I agree with you and don’t think there is enough room to fit in an eat-in area, however small. I just wanted to check first.
