Kitchen worktop.... I have a country kitchen.

It is a wide galley kitchen and trying to keep it rustic. Thinking of having cream units, terracotta floor and worktop in oak, but slate around sink and hob. Do you think this will look odd?

Hard to say without seeing the layout - if it’s just a couple of “patches” of slate within the oak I think that could look a bit strange. If it’s a separate area could be fine.

Terracotta is lovely but is a pain to keep clean as it’s porous and oil marks it. Depends if you’re ok with marks - a bit like wood really!

Are you doing it from scratch? I love a beautiful quarry tiled floor, especially if they are handmade, but due to the warmth of them, they may look good set against greyer units. I think when it comes to using textures, it can work if the colour palette is restrained. I the units were wood you could have a more hardwearing worktop.

Thanks folks.. The unit doors are solid pine and the ceiling is red deal..( hope that's the correct spelling!) It's a cosy space but a little dark I think, if not too overbearing with all the wood..

Hi amfork, I went ahead & put the hob on my island & am delighted I did. I find it really is so much nicer looking out at the kids/my husband & being able to chat to them while I prepare meals as opposed to facing the wall with my back turned on everyone. I put a 4 ring induction hob on the island & put a 5 ring gas hob on counter facing wall. I did this as I have a large extended family & we frequently have get togethers. It’s great for catering for big events. However, I use the 4 ring induction hob on a daily basis. Hope this helps! Best of luck with your project, Claire

I agree with both of the above comments. It depends on the layout and could end up looking 'patchy'. But here's a photo to give you a visual of how it would look if you have slate flanking the sink and hob. I think that in this particular setting it looks pretty good, but it would have looked odd if they had used the granite around the sink too.

Thank you all for your comments. I am starting from scratch. It is a galley kitchen but the width between the units on either side is wide (and there is an open breakfast room at the end). It is a very old cottage so don't really want grey. would make sure the floor was sealed (not glossy though). The hob is on the left and the sink on the right side so these piece of slate would be on either side of the galley. Currently it is all old oak as as much as I would love to keep it, it make the kitchen feel dark and it's in very poor condition. I will sell all this oak on ebay. Considered using some of it but don't think it's going to work as will be even more "patchy"

We had terracotta tiles in our previous kitchen in our cottage. It looked lovely when freshly clean and waxed, but never stayed that way for long. We striped and resales annually, but the sealer always wore off. Was very glad change it for porcelain twelve years later when we extended.

I hope you won’t be offended, but I find quarry tiles quite light sapping, and they can look a bit utilitarian. I think a stone effect porcelain tile gives you that lovely country look but easy to clean - hoover and a quick mop and you’re done. I have pale cream units with an oak worktop and it has fared well. The area around the sink not so well and has a few black patches due to water damage, so I think having slate or other stone surface in that area would be a good idea. I’ll share a few pics separately of stone effect porcelain.

I think it could work - although having had a terracotta floor in a cottage in a previous life, it wasn’t the easiest to live with.
Depending on where you live, I can highly recommend visiting the Devol Kitchens / Floors of Stone showroom near Loughborough. It’s a fantastic place to get inspiration from. Floors of Stone have a terracotta tile listed and show it with an off-white kitchen.
