Help with multi fuel stove installation

We’ve just had a multi fuel burner installed and we have a stainless steel band around the flu. I questioned the installer about this as I didn’t like the look of it and apparently it’s a legal requirement to have it to have access to clean the flue. Can anyone tell me if this is true or not? I asked if it was possible to have one in black and apparently not but the said they would spray it black for us. It’s now been taken off and hole for cleaning is visible. It looks a bit rough and ready to us but we don’t know what to expect. Can anyone give us advice? Many thanks

Building regs require that there be access for chimney sweeping. If your installer is HETAS registered you will need to follow their recommendations in order for them to certify the installation as compliant with building regs. If not, you need to get building control to sign off the installation. Our flue can be accessed from inside the stove so we don’t have the same. Your opening looks very tight. The stove will usually come with recommendations for how much clearance there needs to be between it and the walls of the opening. Presumably you will be having a hearth fitted as this needs to extend at least 30 cm in front of the stove. I was wondering what the wires were for and also the holes in the ceiling of the opening?

Thanks for your comment. We just hadn’t seen a stainless steel plate like that around a flue before. I even googled it and still couldn’t find an image of a similar thing. He is HETAS approved so we will be taking on his advice. The holes in the top are for fire proof down lighters. We’re waiting for the hearth to arrive before it is installed- hopefully next week!

Happy to help ! I'm only a short swim away in England !! I think if you want a truly opulent cream for the kitchen cabinets - I'd suggest you get a colour match for the range ! It looks a very creamy cream ! Think it could be stunning ! Then have slightly lighter walls and tiles to keep the room feeling light and airy ! If you have walnut stain for your worktop on your island , I'd suggest using that on your exposed legs if you go for the dipped paint look on the table and chairs ! Are you having the classic CC shaped island ?!?

fragle0 ... congratulations on the new addition to your family. Have been following your lovely changes. You probably won't have time to work on the decor for a while. Just wanted to suggest that you try pulling the nesting tables forward to be more in line with front of the chairs & placing your floor lamp to the back of them. This will give a bit more light at night for reading in that area.Also switching the plant by the fireplace & the one on the corner by the sofa.

A guy removed my existing fire place and did the installation. It was fire boarded and sealed around where the stove sits. I had a paint mixed at the local dulux centre "slightly off white" diamond hard acrylic eggshell don't used oil based paint. This was painted inside the chimney before the stove was installed I used a small roller 3/4 coats. Front wall is again from the dulux centre Flat white emulsion. The whole look is very plain but if you like the look, dress the walls with tasteful art and a nice vase or two, It works for me.

Hi,
I would think it probably is a requirement to have access to the flue for sweeping etc - however your set up looks a bit odd!!
In my burner, the flue is accessed through the burner itself, so we don’t have any access from the flue pipe, so no hole.
My brothers burner does have access - however it’s a very neat door. Just google woodburner flue pipe access doors and you will see examples - usually it’s a small circular door in either black or a contrasting chrome.

If I was you, I would spend some time googling and then show the fitter to see if he will change it. You might have to buy a new bit of pipe with a door - but it’s relatively cheap in the scale of fitting the burner.
The one that you have looks functional but it also looks a bit rough and “homemade”. If I had to have an access door, I would want to choose what it looks like!
