help choosing over front door light

Ignore the crappy door and render - it will eventually get replaced and render repainted!

Can only put a light above the door due to various issues and the door is on the side of a 30’s bungalows

Struggling to know what light to put above it. Like something more modern/industrial to match the inside of the house. Ideally under £60 but bit flexible on that.

Needs to have a sensor light as dark area.

So I really like the black framed industrial style lantern but can’t seem to find one that’s got a sensor on it? Will it also give off less light than say a frosted white filter light??

Just tried to upload and post some text and a a photo, and the lot disappeared! Don’t tell me the App is doing that now. Try again. Those bulbs sound amazing, but I wonder if it can be overridden so you can have them on all the time, for example when you’re expecting visitors?

As far as light range goes, my light is one of those that looks like it is wearing a hat, and the range is quite good. It spreads down my steps and onto the pavement beyond, about 5m or more. Now I know it’s not your style Tani, but hope this photo shows what I mean.

Just wanted to add something regarding the steps since I had also asked for advice on them: we had steps installed in slate, but unfortunately they did not turn out to look very nice, so will need to get redone . Was wondering if we should also incorporate some of the bricks seen on the porch, perhaps as risers covered by blue limestone or slate just to tie everything together?

I would go for a stone colour so not too dissimilar to what you've got. Little Greene does a good stone colour too but will work out a bit expensive. This is Oxford stone by farrow and ball. If you were doing the windows and front door then maybe an old white with door and windows in french grey

I will try and find one of those then - either one of the wall lanterns as I’ve always liked them. Just slightly worried they are more for ambient lighting and won’t light the door much .

My front door light didn’t have a sensor, but my wonderful electrician said he could wire it into a separate sensor. So the light is above my front porch and the sensor is just inside the porch arch. He then fitted a switch inside where you can either have the sensor working or it can be overridden to have the light on all the time. Hope this makes sense!

Three years later and it’s all working beautifully still.

@Sonia - great idea! Was it more expensive to have a separate sensor? Not sure why my electrician didn’t suggest that (rolls eyes, lol) !

Go for the separate sensor. On the other integrated lights check the sensor will detect where you will be walking. They might only sensor straight ahead and miss you walking below it.

That’s so clever! (I went with the cheap, far less stylish option of having a solar powered PIR LED one... I mean it does work super well... but yea, definitely not the best looking option...)

Tani, it was included in the overall price of having our house rewired so I don’t know the individual cost. The actual light was only £12 from B&Q! It’s not really your style, too shabby chic, but I do love a bargain. Have a look at www.lighting-direct.co.uk. I’ve bought a few things from them and they have a huge range of lighting. Here’s a pic of my motion sensor tucked into the porch, and a similar one I found online, so I don’t think they’re too pricey.

Oh yes I’ve seen that site and even passed it onto my electrician as they are really cheap! Thanks. That might work out better as I can find lots of nice non sensor lights and we can just add this separately:0)

@E D yes I would have loved lights either side but it’s not an option unfortunately due to the outside wall on the right of the door, being a filled in chimney breast. The room that wall is on has the corner missing off it so he would have to drill in through 2ft min of wall (maybe more??) to get the cables though, ha ha.
Could possibly do it through all the internal door frame but it’s all on the side of the house anyway so it’s more for practical reasons we need the light for

The light I liked didn't have a sensor so i just had it hard wired then bought a dusk 2 dawn bulb for it. Worked perfectly and I could turn it completely off inside if i wanted.

I think you need something that shines light downwards, if it’s going to help you find the key hole on dark nights. How about:

Great idea re the bulb.
I’m still waiting to hear back from my electrician re the separate PIR anyway.

Would the small downlighters not be too tiny? @Minipie - I was worried it would not spread enough over the door so was looking for a wider light?

I think a daylight sensor (so light comes on at dusk and off at dawn) is a better choice than a movement sensor, for a front door light.

my bulb was a daylight sensor rather than movement so came on soon as it was dark and went off during daylight. however I could override it and turn it off at night if I wanted.

@Sonia thanks for the photo - it looks great! I’m not adverse to that type of light at all. Adds a bit more character.

So I think the box one I like is nice and stylish but as pointed out, it’s just a bulb and not a downlighter - which is really what I need. I’m thinking a standar PIR might be better because otherwise I will forgot to turn the light off at night and it will be on all the time, lol.
Might just illuminate the house number with a solar light on the actual front of the house so people can see that.

@minipie - those look nice. I was concerned they would look a bit lost above a door as I’ve seen them at the sides of doors but never above ?
Not many images of smaller lights above doors which is why I’m struggling to see what will look nice :0/

Thanks all! Spent another few hours looking and just ended up ordering a fisherman’s style light which I think will look quite nice and work with our house theme so fingers crossed!
