Access Shelf under semi-recessed basin

A while ago I had the opportunity to look around a show home on a new estate. It was an expensive house and fitted out very nicely. But the one thing that I remember most (sad isn't it) is that in the bathroom there was a semi-recessed basin. Centrally under this was a small inset shelf, the size of a single tile. Useful for a couple of bottles or perhaps a candle but most significantly it could just pull out to give access to the pipework and service valves behind.

Has anyone come across this sort of thing? Are they available off-the-shelf so to speak or is it likely something that was made up by the bathroom fitter. My google-fu is failing me.
