Lighting Dilemma

Hi everyone, i was wondering if you could enlighten me a bit as I cannot decide how I am going to coordinate the lighting in these rooms. so next to my kitchen and dining area i have two empty areas which require lighting. I was thinking of maybe matching the kitchen and dining light fixtures (a ceiling light for the kitchen and bar lights over the dining table) but then, should the other two light fixtures match in style to the kitchen/dining fixtures since they are in the same area? there are no false ceilings/soffit. there's an outlet in the middle of each area and i have to stick with those

Hi Angelique,

In interior design we treat each room differently in terms of their look and feel. Whilst you can create flow from one to another by no means does everything have to match! In fact we try not to make everything match-matchy when designing as it can look too curated and unconsidered.

What you could do, is create a style which has similarities and has little nods to one another. You could go for similar lighting in your empty areas as the kitchen and dining but don't have to be identical. e.g. 3 or 4 different styles of industrial lighting.

I agree with victoriabunglowranch, scrub it and repaint in one of the colours of the piece, I'd personally head towards dark and moody colours for walls, with crisp white ceilings, how about wrapping the chimney in smokey mirror in same shade that you paint the wall, I agree floor is very busy, would like to see a large rug here to keep the focus on the fireplace and I'd keep the "mantle area" free from objects, the fire place is enough, art work on side walls and floral pieces on coffee tables or buffets, I'd also choose luxe furniture and fabrics in one of the lighter shades shown in the fireplace, perhaps with a slight leaning towards art deco in some pieces and then spice up with accent cushions, art, lamps and lighting. Art Deco can carry contemporary pieces too, be brave here this could be a very special room with it's own personality and with care it will still link to the other areas of the house.

Go for a beige upholstered headboard, white bedding, beige throw & some feature cushions that have the beige & grey in them. Another option is to paint the walls to a similar shade as the wardrobe so it blends in. I would be careful what you do for furniture, possibly steer clear of too much more timber

Rear south facing extension design dilemma

We are adding a rear single story extension to our semi detached 3 bed house, the rear of the house is south facing so lots of natural light, our current design is for a pitched roof with Velux in the roof and triangular windows on the back wall. Has anyone encountered blinding shafts of light through these upper windows? At the moment we notice in autumn / winter / early spring when the sun is lower we have to put the blinds down at the back of the house. The blinds for triangular windows I find ugly and dust magnets, but our architect thinks I am mad to remove them from the plans Many thanks for all advice
