As its a bedroom, I would choose soft colours and keep it neutral.
The lighting is very important in a bedroom so I would first change the light and find a modern light that produces a soft glow/ Yellow soft light. Or just change the light bulb :-) if budget is an issue
For the curtains, I would go for Roman Blinds as it saves space and you won't need to use as much fabric. I would add a sheer blind too to use during the day. ( you will be able to see out but during the day no one will be able to see in. At night you would use the Roman Blinds
Colour of the walls should be nice and gentle colour, for example, Skimming Stone ( Farrow and Ball) or French Grey Pale ( Little Green ). Ask your decorator to mix these colours for you at B&Q with Dulux Colour. Most decorators know this trick to save money on paint.
The carpet I would also go for a soft touch grey tone. Most Carpet shops will be able to give you a huge selection of reasonably priced carpets.
