Help with living room layout

I am in a 3 bed semi built in the 197os - my front door currently opens onto my living room with a staircase going upstairs. Originally there would have been a wall between the living room and hall, taking you through to kitchen but this has been knocked down to create a more open space. If I close up the living room, it will be 4mx3m. I am unsure whether I should do this or not. I have been looking at putting up a wall with double pocket doors or just putting up a wall with a large opening onto new hall (no door). I feel at present it all feels a bit jumbled with living room furniture, hall table and stairs all in one room - any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

My sisters house had stairs open to the living room, and when she had a baby she knew she had to put up a wall, as obviously the baby was disturbed by noise downstairs at bed time. She also put a door in the wall opening into the living room. The baby is now 12, but she recently got a dog, so again the wall/door barrier has been a real help! I must say I only have a tiny hall, but I would hate to be without it, makes the sitting room much cosier.

Do you have a floor plan and photos? It would just help to know how big the hall would be, impact on existing furniture etc and maybe people could give ideas for something other than the hall table if needed?

i couldn't find great pictures as it's hard to know what to put in the search key but you could also have a glass partition wall which would give you the feeling of space but still allow hall furniture

im not entirely sure how you'd hang them (!) but you could also try hanging sheets where the wall would be and live with it for a while to see what you think. Obviously it wouldn't give you the benefits of heat and sound that the wall would but would give you a proper idea of the space and privacy from front door etc

Hi, I'm trying to rearrange my living room but having a bit of difficulty. The room has 3 doors in it (1 hall door, 1 kitchen door & 1 door for under the stairs). There's also a fireplace and then one large window. I'm trying to create space for while already having the likes of our tv, 2 & 3 seater sofas so to have the room prepared for when Christmas rolls around! Hi there I’m building a new house and need to buy furniture as we are about 12-16 weeks out now. I have struggled with furniture layout as had originally been thinking of a corner couch in the middle or the roof so fire and tv would be visible when you sat down, but I drew it on floor in chalk and all it did was create a walkway around the couch with no real space for anything else - eg additional chair at the back end of the room etc. Felt to me like a waste of space and no function. I seem to have a lot of window and not so much wall to work with and as the ceiling is vaulted at the end where I have the fireplace seems to me would be odd not to orientate the furniture towards that view! I’ve drawn an alternative option in a programme I found online which I set out below with some pictures. The ceiling is vaulted to about 4.5 metres or so at the wall where the plant is in the picture below. Inset fire on that wall and tv on wall opposite over a sideboard. Any suggestions / improvements would be greatly appreciated- many thanks I’m advance!

Hi thanks for comments, the hall would be about 1.2 m wide. I like the idea of a glass partition, maybe sliding glazed double doors. I will try the sheets idea and see how the space feels thanks
