Design Dilemma Gardens

garden design ideas needed

Hello

We're a family of 5 about to have an extension on the back of the house which will restrict access to the garden to approx a 1m gap. We're looking at getting the garden sorted before the extension gets underway and were looking from some inspiration. 3 young children. Looking to put a wood burning pizza oven next to where the existing sun room is. Currently our idea is to simply have one, uninterrupted lawn from the edge of the garage going though to the hedge.

Any ideas would be much appreciated!

My advice would be to not sort the garden till after the extension is done.

The amount of stuff that will get brought in, left churned up during the build... there’s no point spending the money on the garden now.

If you’re wanting a big item that won’t fit through the 1m gap, then maybe bring that in first, but definitely don’t do the lawn! This is ours currently and when it was a bit worse...

I would say absolutely get any hard landscaping, large shrubs or trees and garden building such as shed, done before the building work starts.

The configuration of our house means we have no direct access to the back garden, so everything has to come through the kitchen. This wasn't a problem before we had the kitchen done, as it was all a bit rough and ready in there. But even so in the past we've had to manhandle a shed over the flat kitchen roof and had to beg access to a neighbour's paddock to lift slabs & a cement mixer over the garden wall.

We had some further hard landscaping done when they laid the new drains for the kitchen, along with a couple of trees taken down - which all went through the kitchen before it was done.

But the garden is done now and the only things that go through the kitchen now is bagged grass clippings and a bit of bagged garden waste.

HI -- That is a big yard . Section off for your needs . Plan a patio and entertainment area close to the house . Then an area for the kids and then an area for a garden if needed and so on . Maybe build a little garden /summer house that has a fireplace or is screened in . Then the left over area you could just have it as a natural meadow with lots of trees where you don't need to mow grass -- the dog would love that . Add lighting too. Use some Eco grass ( no mow ) and lots of perennials and trees . Make a grove of trees like aspens or birches . Because of the size of your property , you should consult with a landscape designer .

Big drop from French Doors to garden (kid friendly ideas)

Our new house has a large drop from the back door (soon to be French doors) to the back garden. I have an active 18 month old boy and a soon to be mobile 6 month old girl, there is no way I can leave the set up as it is as its very steep and dangerous (even for adults). The most obvious solution I can see is to build out a raised deck. Its a sunny spot in the evenings so it probably would be used, but tbh decking is just not really something I naturally gravitate towards. I was wondering if there were any other ideas I have overlooked? it has to be relatively cheap as our savings are being swallowed by the house renovation. I need something kid (and dog) safe that will lessen the chance of accidents. Thank you!
