Lighting Design Dilemma Kitchens

lowered ceiling for island

Hi,

I am incorporating a lowered ceiling above a kitchen island which is 3000mm x 1200mm and includes a 900mm gas hob in the centre. The lowered ceiling will house a Faber Heaven 2.0 ceiling extractor, 3nr pendant lights will be installed for the seating area and some LED strip lighting installed around the lowered ceiling in the shadow gap.

I have some questions in terms of typical dimensions as follows, the first point being the one I’m most unsure about:

typically what depth does the shadow gap in the lowered ceiling need to be for effective LED illumination? I’ve currently had the frame built in timber with a 50mm gap and whilst this provides a lowered ceiling which is exactly the size required (not too bulky) I’m pondering if a 100mm shadow gap would have been better but at the same time I don’t want it to look to bulky. Floor to lowered ceiling height is 2270mm with a 50mm shadow gap. If I increase the shadow gap to 100mm it will be 2220mm. Depending on which option we go with it will give between 1320mm to 1370mm between worktop/hob and lowered ceiling;
Is it best to construct the lowered ceiling exactly as per the island measurements at 3000mm x 1200mm or slightly bigger / smaller? I want it to look the same size as the island but considering tolerances etc;
At what dimensions is it best to install the 3nr. Pendants? My current thinking is 300mm into the island from the seating.

Hi, this dilemma is not an exact science. The image below is one of my projects where we used a dropped ceiling. In this instance it had a 100mm shadow gap for recessed LED lighting. We didn’t use pendants over the breakfast bar area, but had we done so they would have been installed in the location of the recessed down-lights. I think you will need Some additional recessed down-lights to achieve an adequate level of ‘working light’. Hope that helps.

Thanks for your advice and nice kitchen. Appreciate this isn’t an exact science and so it’s good to share thoughts with someone who’s done it before. I am leaning towards increasing the shadow gap to 100mm, and will consider additional lighting, as the extractor has lighting incorporated I initially didn’t think it would be required.

Can I ask, on your project was the lowered ceiling the same dimension as the island or did you make it a touch larger / smaller?

Well, you could certainly provide some counter height stools without adding onto the counter. I would make the stools simple ones that don't call attention to themselves. Look at how the ones below are there to be sat upon but there's no overhang. The height you will need is called a counter stool. Or you have space for 2 at each end of the island with just a big of an overhang. People just like a place to perch while they chat with you while you're cooking. White stools would blend right into the island and be inconspicuous.

Hi there, The manufacturer of the extraction fan should be able to guide you as to how far above the cooker it should be installed. This type of information is often featured on the manufacturer's website, or you could contact them directly for their technical specification sheet. Hope that helps. Best of luck with your project!

I agree with 'Kitchens and Baths', you are leaving yourself precious little counterspace to accommodate 2 side-by-side wall ovens? Can't you stack them if you need 2? Also, a warning, I wouldn't be taking anything out of those ovens and "turning to the island" with them...not with a quartz countertop!! You'll have that whole end all scorched...unless you are quick and accurate with lots of trivets! But your "open shelving" is going to look like a pinched-in forgotten corner pantry...you really need more space for them too , if it is going to look right. Right now as it is, 2 feet of them are all but beyond reach (over the lower countertop) and then a mere 2 feet worth of actually OPEN, available space you can reach, then the monster of the floor to ceiling cabinet will be in the way. It will be like reaching around into a closet. I would seriously reconsider this design BEFORE your electrician shows up--and before you order all those (expensive!) cabinets. But as for the island 'crowding' the walkway--it looks as if your drawing says 1.2 meters? That's plenty and more than enough, even for running boisterous kiddos, you're fine there. Best of Luck.

Hi Ed I was struck by the similarity with our new kitchen layout. We recently renovated and I absolutely did not want either an overhead extractor (because I wanted to raise the ceiling), but also did not want to cut expensive quartz for a pop-up extractor which all seem to give trouble eventually and basically don't work! The solution was a German-made Bora induction hob with the downdraft in the middle of the hob. I have to say that it was the best investment we made! Ours could not be ducted outside (which is always the best option) without losing too much efficiency so we went for a filtration system. It works even better than I thought removing all smells and grease! It was really well worth the money. ...and no ugly hood blocking the view out! Watch the videos on the website - it actually does work exactly like that! They also do different options where you have gas on one side and induction hob on the other with the extractor in a panel between the two. Definitely an investment! You really do need extraction though as Fiona said. Strong cooking smells will will be absorbed into your furniture and soft furnishings in an open plan area. The best of luck with your project. I hope you love the end result as much as we love ours.

Hi Yasin, you are most welcome. To be honest, I can't rememember the exact dimensions of both the dropped ceiling and island, but they were very close. Hope all goes well.
