Water or oil based paint Advice

I'm painting my wooden staircase, not the treads, re carpeting that. I've sanded off the varnish, yo the bare wood.

I would like yo use a good quality water based paint like Dulux diamond shield because it doesn't yellow and quick drying time. However the 8 doors in my hallway and upstairs have previously been painted in an oil based paint (it has yellowed). I believe you cannot use a wAtwe based paint on top off an oil based paint? Unless you sand it way back almost to the bare.

I think using two kinds of paint (oil on on doors )and (water based) on staircase might look odd and mismatched.

Any advice appreciated.

As long as you sand enough to take the glossy surface off all the paint to provide a key and remove imperfections that should be sufficient. Use fine grit sandpaper. Make sure you clean well afterwards using a tack cloth and then / or sugar soap or meths. You will then need to use an adhesion primer or a product like zinsser coverstain before undercoating and topcoating in your chosen paint.

I would also definitely go white if the windows are on the green wall. Will be much more natural to tie the accent wall with the stark wht contrasting walls. Always a very chic contemporary look. Also very relaxing as opposed to the treatments standing out when you already have your standout feature- the green accent wall. Great white bed you ordered! Then I love all the blue/green/ silver accent advice. I did a similar room in purples/greys/ whites and we used great posted prints of florals with a little oriental flair in nice big mats w frames. You could do florals or nice big botanicals in greens would be very fresh and modern!! White or silver frames or maybe even the shock of black would be cool.

OK then I think you might have to work asymmetrically. Instead of many cupboard doors, over your boiler, have one door placed over it with a push in push out system to open it. This will create a smooth "wall" - paint this and the wall above the brick area cream and the brick below grey.I would then change the cabinet on the other side so that you use cream with a grey counter and even grey shelves...Could this work better?More photos would certainly help? Where is your chalet?

All oil based paint yellows, but it has little to do with heat. The paint makers over the years have had to refine the chemicals so as not to cause health problems, things like lead used to be common place but have now been made near extinct. The advantage is that there's no hidden surprises in the paint, the bad news is it now yellows quickly. Providing the satinwood and gloss are both oil based I don't see why he would recommend one over the other when they are both essentially going to yellow. I would keep an eye on him as the difference between satinwood and gloss is that satinwood is self undercoating...meaning less time spent undercoating and preparing so it makes his job a little easier. If you don't want it to yellow use water based but the finish isn't anywhere as good as you would get with oil based

Lovely, much better than the 3D plan. V glad you kept your patterned floor tiles, I really like them. It's all come together very attractively. The only thing I'd change and this is just because I'm a colour freak is the pendants - I'd probably have made those red and orange or something. But congrats really, it looks great.

yes sand the doors, use the sander along with the dust extractor if you don't like to make to much dust in your property, apply appropriate primer/undercoat, zinsser may be a good option, bare in mind there are few types of a zinsser primer, use flexible filler where necessary and apply two top coats, for best results light sand between coats..

Thanks. I'm sanding the doors tomorrow.That's a good point about the dust, can't be healthy, I don't have a dust extractor for my sander, might try and get one.
