bungalow exterior ideas, kerb appeal help ?

We are looking for some help and advice regarding the exterior of our bungalow. We have lived in the property for 10 years and although the interior is what we hoped for, the exterior could be much better. We would like to remove the tiles from the front and maybe render the full property and spray the windows grey/green. Any help or advice is much appreciated and we are on quite a tight budget so do not want to spend a fortune. Thanks in advance.

Render is very 'on trend' right now, especially coupled with grey windows. 100s of houses across the country are receiving 'the treatment' in the same way.

However, I think that when trends move on, what was once a house with it's own character, appropriate to its age, is obliterated by a pastiche of a passed fad and style not necessarily in keeping with the house.

The resulting problem then is that you're left with a render that will need re-painting regularly and window frames which were in fashion but may later appear dated, that will require replacing or repainting.

Personally, I think if you render it, it'll take on the look of a scout hut - sorry

Not sure about changing the colour of the windows. If you are thinking about the tiles, how about PVC cladding? - available in many colours, but a light grey would look good. Then paint the little side wall the same colour, along with the outside of the garage. The two conifers look lopsided - maybe add a third to the right, under the hanging basket. Either that, or replace both larger trees with 3 smaller ones, and keep an eye on their size. The colour in the picture is not the right one, as it seems more beige.

Garden design on line thanks for your graphics we have a similar deck structure to the side of the house- its more protection from the elements we need at the front of the house. Dyctecture i had considered a floating canopy but couldn't visualise how it would look- thanks for the mock up. But I do need more shelter as we live in the west coast of Ireland and the weather here can be pretty wet and windy!! This is the main access to the house and on a wet day the entrance hall can get very wet. Gildaville, I like the idea of following the existing triangle shape but definately need a roof- i just can't visualise how it would look and what material it can be constructed from. I really appreciate your replies.

Hello egreevy, Okay, yes I see, it's a difficulty but maybe not impossible... Just whether you want to try to find out more about this.. Taking windows out to paint is a bigger job but it may still be possible.. ... So for the immediate.. Paint the front door (just the door) it might give a nice finish to have the side windows white.. Then you have a bit of contrast like your image above.. and add window boxes with lovely foliage or buxus.. it will work with the green you already have... I couldn't see as my screen was dimmed.. I think leaving all the ivy colour you have at present would be really nice.. (hence my suggestion of more green!! Also I wouldn't paint the pebble dash, to me it looks absolutely fine on the house itself.. Maybe the small boundary wall at the front and a bit of the garage.. Also a flat box hedge coming over the top of the boundary wall could be nice too.. It will be lovely and green.. : ) )

Hi we need major curb appeal help! We are able to change the siding, we can paint and change the eaves or gutters, the windows have to stay in place but we can change the style or add grills etc... The roof stays (Timberlane Shakewood color) and our door is going to be moved. We purchased a 6 lite craftsman door. It will go where there is an existing window and will face the driveway and street. We do a lot of gardening so we were thinking of a cottage or bungalow look. We like the look of cedar shake siding and we also think a pergola in the front would help break up the space but would love any drawings or advice to help us visualize a changed look.

Thanks for the comments. I am not a big fan of the pvc cladding but have thought about cedar wood. I don't know if the plastic will start to look a bit cheap and tacky over time. I would like to brighten the property up and thought render would be the best option. Our property is the only bungalow on the street and sits on its own so it is already noticeable I am just worried of making it an eye sore.

Between pvc and wood there's composite. Might cost a bit more, but will never rot and doesn't look tacky. Best of both worlds?

I'd keep the red brick and windows just the way they are.

We honestly do not know what will look best and don't want to have any regrets. I do like render with the grey windows but obviously this would be a total transformation.

Look around for brick houses with planks on the upper floor(s).

Thanks for all your comments, we like the scout hut 1 lol. We know the render and grey could be out of fashion in time. I really the first house pic with the black cladding, it looks like real wood to me painted black??? The windows are fairly new in our too so painting them is daunting. Thanks again, any comment good or bad welcome, Tom.

I like the tiles as they are but would paint the red brickwork a gentle green and focus on replanting/landscaping the border in front to create a more updated look. Very brave of you to ask for all ideas...hope you get inspiration from some of them!

I'm wondering if rather than change aspects of the building, just a change to the frontage might make enough of a difference, as in a more contemporary planting scheme? Some modern pots maybe, a new house number, and perhaps paint the little bit of wall a fresher white colour? Should be cheaper too, and if you're still not happy then you could have another think

The street consists of 1930 semi detached houses. Our bungalow was built in 1968 on a patch of spare land. All the other houses are traditional and are all red brick. I don't want to go ultra modern to be honest e.g black and white clean lines. Right now I am thinking black wooden arch cladding in place of the tiles and have the brick sand blasted and repointed. We are going to reshape the conifers and smarten the pots up plus change the lights anyway. Or render it
