Hole in Party Wall - could this be the reason we can hear neighbours?

Hi guys,

We can hear our neighbours downstairs in the living room towards one side, whether their TV is presumably, and we can hear the TV really loud and clear. Other parts of the house is ok - bedroom is quieter upstairs. It's very obvious where the sound comes from (towards one side of the wall) and it's a bit strange. Looking through the building survey we had, there were a few bricks missing in the party wall in the attic, and we are wondering if that could be the reason we are hearing them? Any ideas how we can mitigate the noise? It's a bit impractical to soundproof everything as the sound only comes from one side.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Most likely one of you has no carpets and the sound travels along the floor.
The solution is to insulate under the floor

My husband is rather deaf and he always puts the tv on so loud you can hear it in the next street, so maybe that is the reason rather than poor insulation? I keep having to tell him to turn the damn thing down!

I would also definitely go white if the windows are on the green wall. Will be much more natural to tie the accent wall with the stark wht contrasting walls. Always a very chic contemporary look. Also very relaxing as opposed to the treatments standing out when you already have your standout feature- the green accent wall. Great white bed you ordered! Then I love all the blue/green/ silver accent advice. I did a similar room in purples/greys/ whites and we used great posted prints of florals with a little oriental flair in nice big mats w frames. You could do florals or nice big botanicals in greens would be very fresh and modern!! White or silver frames or maybe even the shock of black would be cool.

How will you pose for your Miss Photogenic photo op? Will you go with the Carmen Miranda fruit bowl tiara? Or would the Easter egg thingamadooeys suffice? Decisions, decisions..... The rules may have changed but when we built our extension the wall adjoining our neighbour had to be completely within our own boundary. It looks as if your neighbour has continued along the party wall and therefore half the depth of the wall is on your land. It might be worth getting a chartered building surveyor to check it out as otherwise it may cause difficulties when either you or your neighbour come to sell. If I'm wrong about this maybe a professional on here could correct me. Other than that I think you should make the best of the little private courtyard it has afforded you by using plants in pots and climbers to soften the wall.

Hello nicnoll, Another idea could be to have a wall light that is all about the bulb! A few links to both ideas.... Copper is good too... One other idea... have a rose with multi flex wires... centralised where the current one is.. Then choosing cable/flex and lengths.. run them along to where you want.. either along ceiling.. in loops with hooks to loop round and fix position, so then excess becomes a drop pendant to add something lovely.... Or you run them in loops across the ceiling to the opposite wall and have a wall light fitting but the electric cable comes from the one ceiling point. So less to do wiring wise.. Thanks Jonathan, that is a good suggestion, this is the first time I've moved into a property where the living room has no carpets but laminated floor. Would a rug dampen the sound do you think, if it were the case?

Sonia, you are right, the TV does feel loud, but I'm not sure whether they realise that! Sigh.
