VERY small bathroom dilemma

Hi House Talkers

We are currently renovating our family home and have a dilemma about a downstairs toilet/shower room. My husband is clinging to the hope that we can squeeze a shower in, but we realistically don’t have the space and we don’t need an extra shower.

So, in short, does anyone have a 700mm quadrant shower and is it worth having? Or if anyone has any amazing suggestions, I’d be very grateful. Here’s our plans, with dimensions. We can move the wall between boiler room store and bathroom, but we need storage so can’t incorporate the two areas and we don’t want to move the boiler. We don’t want a wet room and the soil pipe can’t be moved. Thank you

If you don't really NEED a shower there, make it a comfy loo. A place to store your cleaning items is more important, imho.

A 700mm quadrant is pretty small. I have a 900mm x 900mm quadrant and it’s fine for us. I was put off a 700mm when I stepped inside one in B&Q and felt like I was in a coffin! Not that I’ve ever been in a coffin but you get the gist. I’d try one out just to make sure. I’m wondering a wet room, but everything would get wet (loo roll etc) in such a small space, I would imagine?

We had a 760mm Square shower in one of our en-suites, by the time you added tiles on both sides it was closer to 700... I’m relatively petite (5’3”) and it felt snug to me... it was fine and I used to use it to wash my hair but I made sure we could fit a larger one in during our remodel.. (if putting elbows out washing hair I’d often hit the wall slightly!) and I’d imagine your hubby isn’t the same size as me, so I expect he wouldn’t actually use it much!

East Kent Eco - again thank you for your input. As a pro I wonder if you could offer your thoughts on a couple of scenarios 1 - Leave bath where it is - what would be involved in moving the shower 4-6 inches to the centre of the bath? I did consider the P shaped bath and will consider your suggestion for a shorter bath to allow room for the toilet, but I currently had to put in a door stop to protect the shower door from the entrance door handle and I would be concerned about a rounded door being even closer. If I left the bath where it is I have a couple of options, turning the toilet and cistern 90 degrees to the adjoining wall - see above for the considerations there, or I have also considered switching the toilet and sink. I would put the sink facing the wall where the cistern currently is have a large-ish vanity from the base of the bath to the wall, and the if the toilet was where the sink is it would not interfere with the doors for the hot press as the seat would be considerably lower than the sink is currently thus giving me the better access I want. In this scenario the main issue for me would be the toilet would be facing the entrance door, a bit unsightly but if it gave me the space I want I think I could live with the compromise. 2 - A bit more involved, but I have also considered moving the bath sideways along the short length of the room, shower end over the space where the cistern is currently and moving the sink and toilet to the space where the bath is currently. I think this would allow me room for a vanity and maybe also a tall storage cupboard for the towels and linens currently in the hot press. The obvious concern with this is the shower spray in the direction of the hot press, if I got the storage I needed elsewhere in the bathroom I wouldn't be concerned about those getting wet, but would want to ensure I don't end up with a leak over the stairs. Access would also be an issue if repairs were required for the shower pump or the hot water system. You would have to step into the bath to gain access. Is there a solution to waterproof the cupboard?

Hello Edel, Well you are in the fortunate place having a loo and shower downstairs.. I am sure this might become useful when the boys are older.. So if you wanted more wardrobe space.. This doesn't have to involve wall to wall cupboards.. You could have free standing wardrobes.. A bigger bathroom would mean you could have double wall hung sinks and large walk in shower and a separate bath.. Wall hung loo as well.. Or possibly you could create a wet room style shower and loo and separate walk in closet.. accessed from your bedroom. Keep a bathroom next door.. Hard to tell if any of these ideas could work without a plan.. : ))

Tile the Walls and Floor in a bright color, eg white,light grey or cream as to make the illusion of the room being bigger.

What kind of storage do you need? Joining up the two rooms may give you more space to fit in the bathroom you need as well as sufficient storage. For example you could close up one of the doors and gain more internal wall space for a bigger shower. At the other end you could build floor to ceiling storage units, and you could then design these to house your storage needs.

Thanks both, I stood in the 760 shower in B&Q yesterday and agree it was too small, no way you could pick anything up if you dropped it! My husbands view is that it would only be for occasional use (it’s coming off a study which will double up as a spare room) so you could make do with a smaller shower! I’ve also pointed out that there’s the possibility of one of our children using the study as a bedroom when they are teenagers and don’t want to share anymore, and boys tend to grow taller than their dads. My husband is 6’ and his shoulders are quite broad! I think I’d rather not have a shower than have a small one!

Karen - thanks, yes we’ve thought of this too. Short term we could probably do that as cupboard would be used as a dumping ground for ironing board, Hoover, etc. But long term we would put a hanging rail and shelves for clothing, so you’d get damp clothes!

Hi LJS, it depends how much storage you need in the boiler room, but we agree with rinq. It would be much better to just create a comfortable cloakroom. Also the least expensive.

I agree - great useful storage you’ll use every day is far preferable to an uncomfortably small shower you may use occasionally...

For really small spaces you can get toilets that have a small basin as part of the cistern.

This has me thinking that perhaps a custom walk-in shower. A glass wall and door running from the "top" of the door (according to your plan) to the "bottom left corner" of the shower (according to your plan). You could prevent the water running into the bathroom with a 3" tile divider under the glass wall.

Not a pro, just speculating. Good luck with your remodel!
