Laminate v vinyl flooring

I'm looking for advice re flooring. We've extended for a new openplan kitchen living area. We will be reflooring existing hall and sitting room also, roughly 80m square. I'm not too sure what type of flooring to go for. I like the idea of vinyl being water proof but not the price. Looking at Pergo vinyl planks. Has anyone used them and would you recommend them?

Most laminates are water proof or water resistant now anyway. Go for the brand quick step. Best on the market, reasonably priced and water resistant.

I have to join this discussion of Hardwood in the kitchen. I am a little biased in this discussion because of being a tile contractor for almost 30 years. I have seen alot of hardwood kitchen floors. I have to give you the cons of putting hardwood in. Hardwood floors look great. As far as durability I am not sold. Hardwood floors look great when they are first put in. Depending on the traffic in the kitchen I give them about 4 to 5 years is when you see significant wear. I have seen alot of hardwood floors in kitchens with water damage. Now I know you think you wont have a leak from your dishwasher, refrigerator or a general plumbing leak. Well these things do happen and when it does the hardwood needs to be totally removed. Some times this is not so easy if the hardwood goes under the base cabinets. I am not saying do not put hardwood in the kitchen I think you should look at whats going to work for you. There are plenty of porcelain tiles that will give you the look of hardwood but give you the durability of a porcelain tile. Tile installed properly will last a long time. Hardwood will last but it will look warn to the point that it would need to be refinished at a cost around $2000.00 depending on the size of the room. I don't want to upset the hardwood floor lovers I have it all over my house except the bathrooms and kitchen. The floor is 20 years old 4 kids 2 dogs and still looks great. I am sure what ever you choose it will look great.

We put tile in our kitchen, dining room, pantry, laundry area, entry hallway and coat closet as it flows together last winter. We're very happy with it after having water damage our vinyl plank floor. The only issue we have with the tile is that it's slippery for our two older dogs, but they love lying on it in the summer. I have 2 area rugs in my L shaped dining room along with several throw rugs and and runner in the other areas to provide them with traction, and they do okay. We haven't found it to be cold unless we're having a cold spell, and then it's a bit chilly, but otherwise it's fine. We live north of Seattle. My in-laws put in laminate a few years ago, and my husband says the noise of their dogs toenails on it drives him crazy. It looks very nice though.

Hi Marie. It's difficult to tell how wide the room is but a round table could work at the foot of the stairs. Dress with a large bowl and plants/flowers etc. you could also try hanging 3 chandeliers or pendants down the hall. I would also have either 2 matching consoles opposite each other by the front door or keep your existing and add some seating opposite to create symmetry. I think if you were to dress the console with bigger items it would stand out more ie ginger jars on the bottom shelf, classic urns, plants etc on the top. Once you've got the basics done and budget permits, you can add further floor standing decorative pieces, a small chair etc. I think you definitely need some tall art by the front door though or even mirrors if you're not keen to add art

Have no idea why you are restricted to white doors but we live in a house where all the doors come off the hall and we put in doors with checked glass everywhere to get natural light into the hall and also break up the row of nothing but doors i have pale grey walls but I painted all those doors dark gray and hung very colorful art work down that hall it looks sort of like a gallery and not sterile at all. And yes the doors are on all the doorways including the bathroom you can see nothing through them.

Karndean is great. LVT in itself is a fantastic product. If the money is there, it is a better choice than laminate. However, don't be scared of a real good quality laminate. The quick step ranges are beautiful and fantastic for their price.

I agree that most laminate are now very durable and water resistant but LVT is technically superior to laminate. LVT is softer and warmer than laminate and easier to install too. In terms of pricing our LVT, from a very reputable German supplier start at £15.83+vat per square metre. while out laminate floor start at £14.5+vat. Both before discount

Thanks for your advice. I'm going to look into the quick step range.
How would you rate LVT for floors that will be on different levels? We think the extension might be slightly higher but we won't know until the wall is knocked.
