Help with kitchen lighting please

See below for current kitchen/diner.

Decided to have the 2 larger velux rather than 3 smaller on sloping ceiling, builders started preparation today, see pics.

Builders now looking for lights/sockets plan.

Not really thought about lights! I do know that I do not like recessed spotlights.

South facing, 3.4m rear 2 pane sliding doors, 2 X SKO1 velux above and large bay window so lots of natural light.

I will attach kitchen plan when I find it.

We are having really dark, carbon cabinetry, light white quartz, medium wood karndean flooring.

This is how kitchen will look on entering. 4m run units along left wall. 1.8m island with induction hob. Dining table in front of sliding doors.

So far I have thought 1 pendant light between 2 velux, which will be central to dining table. 2 pendants over island.... Possible a couple wall lights on the left run above sink?

I believe the cabinets are a dark charcoal, sometimes also known as off black... The valences can be even more super simple to make yourself if you buy two table runners with a similar design and sew three ends together :) then sew rod pocket and install the rod on the back of the overhang :) If you can't find table runners, it's such simple sewing that definitely can be done by a beginner.

Hi Mary, I'd say remove the wall tiles and replace them with a glass splashback the whole way round or have a matching granite upstand put in and simply paint the walls. Splashbacks are my favourite as they tend to add some light to the kitchen thanks to its reflective surface. Also another idea would be to play around with lighting, which is getting more and more popular in kitchens now, such as LEDs under your wall cabinets, on top of your cabinets or along the plinth. The added lighting just adds a little something special to the kitchen and more importantly it doesn't have to cost the earth either! Another lighting option could be to go with the industrial lighting craze right now and get something put right above the island which would really add character to the kitchen too! Marius

I have a similar kitchen although the work tops are not dark. We have a light, white/Ivory tile on the floor. Looks lovely and bright, especially for our small kitchen.

Hello Oris1978, What I would start with is painting the walls... Try a really lovely chalky cream.. Little Greene do a nice one called whitening.. It is bright and chalky and much nicer than a plain white.. Then get some nice roller blinds (for budget) Also in a light colour cream or white or something to compliment any flooring you might get... I see you don't want to spend a lot but I want to suggest a flooring. The tiles are not bad but if they are damaged then I would suggest a Lino. May not be exciting you think but when you have looked at the options from Sinclair Till, I think you will change your mind.. Images attached... There are many and I have chosen a few really fantastic designs along with a plainer one, so you get the idea. The floor space is quite big so make the most of that... Move the table and chairs further into the centre of the room... I'd even suggest painting them as well...Take the sofa out of the kitchen and move the other table to where the sofa is, if it's a table.. Can't quite tell? I'd place the items like toaster and kettle nearer so they are grouped together, thus more practical... Maybe invest in something that isn't white. I have to say one of the best investments for the kitchen has to be a Dualit toaster in Chrome! It's a style beauty! A good kettle to go with it and you're set. Dualit does a good kettle too I think it's called Architect? It too is chrome **If floor tiles are good then blinds to match in a sheer fabric not blackout as sheer is lighter and more subtle... The painting... it's lonely! Get something else or move it to a smaller piece of wall... It's really too small in that location... Box in the meter and those bits and all is neat, paint the same colour as the walls.. Voila! : ))

What might be useful is if you have a floor plan of the whole space and if you draw on where things will be like dining table, seating area etc.

You could have pendants over the island and dining table, and maybe under cabinet lights... need to think about where you’re placing all your appliances as well.

There are quite a few kitchen lighting stories as well for more ideas.

But I found taking a floor plan and adding bits helped me see which areas needed something else otherwise they’d be dark.
