Cooker hood heights - lessons learned!

Righto, just looking at the fitting of the chimney cooker hood (Elica Claire 90cm). A lot of advice just focuses on the distance between the hob top (gas in my case) and the bottom of the hood. However, even the kitchen designers only look at this measurement. I would like to set my hood at at least 800mm from the hob top so I don't bang my head on it, but the kitchen seller advises 740-750mm. I'm 5ft6 and would bang my head!

There is another measurement that should be considered, the min height required between the bottom of the hood and the ceiling, otherwise the steel casing covering the extractor motor and ducting won't fit between the hood and the ceiling. Something which isn't even in the main instructions.

Elica don't do a shorter version of the telescopic chimney for the Claire model :(

You are right a cooking hood often needs its own headroom...

The chimney can be cut to the desired length by the installer (very easy to do), the distance between the extractor and the hob is the most important measurement and is specified in the manufacturers instructions and in the case of a gas hob is a legal requirement, manufacturers can't be expected to allow for different ceiling heights as well.

Hi Huw, The minimum height requirement for a hood above a electric hob is 650mm and for Gas it is 750mm.

Bear in mind that standard glass splash-backs are 750mm high so if you have it fitted higher there will be a gap. The chimney can be cut down to suit but if it is vented out of the wall you will need room for the extractor tube. Hope this helps. Phillip from Klass kitchens.
