injecting life into a dark room ....but how ?
We have a long (deliberately) dark lounge- 7.5m x 3.8m wide. Lots of little alcoves/ returns limit the movement of furniture as does the wall mounted Tv. I actually love it dark - as the rest of the house is bright and sunny as this room is shadowed at both ends by bushes and a canopy porch. It already has 3 walls painted in F&Bs Eating Room Red which is gorgeous. The plain silk curtains & plain L shaped leather sofa match this almost exactly. The floor is light travertine tiles. My question now is what do we do with the final back wall - continue the deep red or go for a different / dramatic wallpaper? After that how do we manage the accessories / accents / finishing touches to really bring it to life as its really bare right now? Ive seen so many beautiful rooms here on Houzz that also have a dominant dark colour running through everything and they work beautifully! What do we need to do ? Ive attached a mock up (although the colours aren't quite accurate! ) and a photo of the curtains to show how rich the colour actually is. Any advice on accessories / accents / lamps / pictures would be really appreciated. Thanks in advance for your creativity & input!

Comments (21)Seeing it as an almost whole, I do think now that I like the soft, patterned curtain for the room. It could become overly severe, and that would be enough to stop that happening. Second thought, you don't need a side table for the sectional, but you do need something there to hold a lamp -- silver or glass would probably be best. The stand could be very plain, a box shape, even, in the same finish as the wood you already have. I liked these from wayfair.com -- though I might change the shades on a couple of them. Comments (55)Hi Travis and SoYoung - thanks for mentioning the fireplace.....I was thinking that I would keep it simple with a wood shelf over it and a large piece of Art but I now think it might be a bit lost. Would love some ideas as it needs to work with the built-ins which are slightly domineering. Also, Liam_Boyle - agree re the unbalance. The TV will be staying but I have a lovely coffee table and 2 identical sofas coming so I'm hoping to lay out symmetrically in the room. Will keep 1 of the chairs. Hope this will balance up. Comments (12)I think you should consider houssaon's idea of painting it the same color as the walls. Is the top of the tv console painted wood or is it a stone or composite? In the pictures my ipad shows me speckles (not dirt!!). My ipad sometimes *lies* to me. :) If the gray is the prominent color in the paint, maybe a darker gray would be a good choice too. If you are happy with the gray/green color next to your bookcases, then you should be able to pick a gray that would look good with both the new paint, and the bookcase. Comments (9)Thanks, I wasn't sure where the 9'4 measurement came in. If you're buying all new furniture then look for items on legs, as you can see the floor beneath it will make the space feel bigger. You can also use glass ie a glass coffee table or Louis ghost chairs for example. I'd also go for a large mirror over the hearth or not knowing your style could also have a ŵall of glass tiles for the same effect which will also bounce light. I'd go for a pale tone sofa and use warmer/darker colours for cushions if wanted. If you want a rug then I'd keep it in the same tone as the floor else to visually maximise floor space. I've drawn a very rough plan (not entirely to scale and obviously not knowing where doors etc are!). I assume you're wanting to buy furniture before you move in? If so do you have a similar size room where you could cut out paper templates of all furniture to see if the space works? I would mount the tv on the ŵall if you have one. Hanging it over a slim console (or slim cabinet for storage) means you can add art on the ŵall and accessorise the console so the tv doesn't become the feature of the ŵall. You could go for a coffee table or a small footstool which can double up as extra seating and table. I'd go for a round dining table, 3ft will seat 4 and you can pull it away from the corner when entertaining. i'd go for a 2 seater sofa (c5f?) but try and get a slim one. I don't know the size of the windows but blinds, shutters may also be an idea so curtains don't encroach on the floor space? 4 years agoSo here is a photo - work in progress currently hence dustsheets etc! The rads will definitely be painted dark but the back wall dilemma still stands ...it’s all prepped but what should we do ?

4 years ago@Sam Potter. Oh no! I remember your grey living room Sam and I still think it looks fab. Our dining room is a very similar dark grey (although it’s a bit of a dumping ground with a very dingy carpet and wonky chandelier:)) so maybe I’m a bit biased:) I’m rather in love with this colour atm, Crosby from Abigail Aherns paint range so if I ever get round to the living room I might go for something like this.
