Outdoor plants in a pot

Hello everybody,

I need your advice please, out in my garden i intend to have some nice big trendy colourful pots with some beautiful plants, i would be grateful if you could suggest some nice plants that prefer to be outdoors please ( south facing garden ) .

If you have any suggestion from where i can get these plants or even these pots that i'm dreaming to have in my garden I would be so pleased and grateful .

Depends where you are. Local to me (Herts) we have a wonderful nursery that sells everything from annuals to large tree ferns. They also have many coloured ceramic pots. Ceramic are great but sometimes crack in the winter if contents freeze and expand, but I have several and they’ve been fine so far. Plastic pots are cheaper but they can blow over when it’s windy if the plants are large,

What sort of look are are you going for? Jungly and exotic, wild and cottagey or restrained and formal?

Pots do entail a lot of watering. I do mine every other day when it’s dry. They also need fertiliser once or twice a year. I use granules.

A picture of the garden will help us to gauge what may look good.

Agree with Sonia some pics of the garden will help where you intend to have the pots. Do you want something that looks good all year round, something with flowers etc. ? The bigger the pot the better as they’ll retain more water but they still need more regular maintenance than plants in the ground. I like the glazed ceramic pots although as Sonia says they can sometimes chip or crack with frost but this rarely happens. Local garden centres might have a good selection and Homebase usually have some good ones. Couple of plants which I think are good for south facing are agapanthus, these love being pot bound and should be flowering now depending where you are. And chrysanthemums (or Pot mums), not everyone’s cup of tea but they’re quite happy in a pot forever, green growth nearly all year round, flowers in in November/December (when most other plants have died back) and only needs the dead flowers trimming back when they’ve gone brown. Lavender will be quite happy as well in dry situations but can go woody after a while so would need replacing every few years. There’s lots more we can suggest so let us know your preferences.

Hi Antoinette I too live in Ireland in a Semi Detached. My husband who's the one with green fingers has transformed our garden into an oasis you wouldn't think we lived in a housing estate. You might start with cleaning the slabs. You could change the edging tile with a contrasting one to set it off. Use different sizes and colours of pots. A seating area in one section. Use lots of different colours and plants which are ok to grow in pots. Just seeing all the colours come to life in Spring and Summer will cheer you up. Here are some photos that were taken at the end of summer last year the leaves have started falling from the trees. Oh yeah still have the clothes line up too.

That's a very good idea Christy, I actually have two white roses that are climbers but I will probably have to improvise on the trellis (link on an idea of DIY that would allow me to paint the frame purple as the edge of the flower beds http://houzz.com/s/m=7/u=L3Bob3Rvcy8yNjIwMjcz). It makes me cross that people think they have a right to make some quite negative comments on this post. Masmccar76 put these photos on because she thought people would like to see a genuinely lovely transformation of her garden. Instead there have been some downright nasty comments. You can paint cords and plugs the same as your wall color. This would allow for a decorative glass vessel to hide the cords or anything else to hide the cords. Another option might be a slender bifold screen--if you can find one in the right proportions. Maybe even take two long skinny pic frames and attach them together with hinges.
