How to Decorate Living Room / Dining Room?

Hi, we are having our living room/dining room redone and need a little advice on how best to paint once complete. We are thinking about paining the archway and both back walls shown in the photo a shade of blue (Blue Tang). All other walls, ceiling, skirting, coving etc will be brillint white. We are also fitting white wooden architrave / panneling to the underside of the archway and the edge, and this will also be painted white. The alternate idea would be that we only pain the archway and paint the rest white, or we paint the archway and both 'window' blue. Does anyone have any other suggestions or advice at unsure if it will work / how it will look.

Hi. What make is the paint colour as there appears to be more than one? Brilliant white should work as it has a blue tinge but may be a bit cold and a bit too much contrast? What way does the room face? Personally I'd keep the archway in the living room colour as it "belongs" in that room. I'm also confused where the panelling is going, is it going right the way round in both rooms? The only issue with just painting the 2 long dining rooms walls is that you may close the room in. It's quite tricky using a dark colour in what is effectively an open place space. You could just paint the window wall in the blue although appreciate there's not much wall or if the panelling is going all the way round you could use the blue on that as I suspect it will make the rooms feel wider. What furniture do you have and will the boards stay exposed?

Thanks, I wasn't sure where the 9'4 measurement came in. If you're buying all new furniture then look for items on legs, as you can see the floor beneath it will make the space feel bigger. You can also use glass ie a glass coffee table or Louis ghost chairs for example. I'd also go for a large mirror over the hearth or not knowing your style could also have a ŵall of glass tiles for the same effect which will also bounce light. I'd go for a pale tone sofa and use warmer/darker colours for cushions if wanted. If you want a rug then I'd keep it in the same tone as the floor else to visually maximise floor space. I've drawn a very rough plan (not entirely to scale and obviously not knowing where doors etc are!). I assume you're wanting to buy furniture before you move in? If so do you have a similar size room where you could cut out paper templates of all furniture to see if the space works? I would mount the tv on the ŵall if you have one. Hanging it over a slim console (or slim cabinet for storage) means you can add art on the ŵall and accessorise the console so the tv doesn't become the feature of the ŵall. You could go for a coffee table or a small footstool which can double up as extra seating and table. I'd go for a round dining table, 3ft will seat 4 and you can pull it away from the corner when entertaining. i'd go for a 2 seater sofa (c5f?) but try and get a slim one. I don't know the size of the windows but blinds, shutters may also be an idea so curtains don't encroach on the floor space? In terms of decor do you want light and neutral or dark and moody then people can suggest paint colours?

I think you should consider installing wood or laminate flooring for a more on trend look. Do this first so that you have a nice frame to place your furnishing. Keep the walls painted as they are for now while you figure out what you want to do furniture wise for the room I think you should consider where the TV will be placed so that you can have good viewing and then have the sofa placed opposite the TV. This way you can enjoy the room if tv is going to be placed here. After that the other pieces will fall into place for you. You might also consider making the mantel deeper to display the radio antique?It could be a nice focal point in the room and on the fireplace. Also I like the current color of your room....it will work while you are figuring out what goes where. Paint LAST when you have your color design established in your upholstery. No need to have 100 dollars worth of paint dictating what the sofa color will be. If you do not have funds now, then place things you have now and take your time deciding what you are going to do first. But as your walls look fine and you are not sure about furnishings then do the floor and wait for the rest as funds become available.

I think the only place you could put a tv is probably the corner by the window...over the fireplace is probably too high. a walnut floor and new fresher paint colour would be lovely, would you consider painting the skirting boards and fireplace white or off white to modernise them a bit? we've painted the skirting in our living room (also a walnut floor) and it looks so much better than before. (Have yet to get around to the rest of the house!!)

We recently put on an extension to our kitchen and although I'm not so much having trouble picking colours for the walls there, I do however find it difficult to match up the dining and living all of which are open plan .. the sofas in the living area are removable covers, one set taupe and the other set white, no problem there but my curtins were expensive and I'm reluctant to change them at the moment so really want something to tie everything together ..they are autumnal in colour ...I'd appreciate some advice on paint colours for the walls they dont have to be the same but would have to tone well together ..Thank you

Hi Minnie, thanks for your reply. The paint brand is Johnstone's. My wife also thought Brilliant white might be too cold so we are now considering something with a little bit more warmth, possibly a more 'creamy' colour. The living room faces West, the dining room East - the living room gets the sun in the evening. The paneling would be going around the inside edge of the arch, basically an architrave that wraps the sides and the under edge. I have had it suggested to me that we paint the two window walls and the archway in blue as that will link the rooms together whilst ensuring that the colour is visible regardless of which room you are in or where you are sat? The boards will stay exposed though we are sanding them are treating with a light oak coloured varnish. Furniture wise, the sofa is an beige/mocha fleck colour, dining table is 'shabby chic' wooden top with white legs, Coffee table is wood topped with white legs.
