Design Dilemma Bathrooms Bedrooms

Help, we have no vision and need to remodel our new home!

We are moving to a new house that hasn’t been decorated since it was built about 80 years ago! It had an extension added over the top of the garage, which has left a massive master bedroom and HUGE en suite. We feel the space could be used much better, we’d love to have an extra en suite for our teen daughter in one of the rooms ( the large front room next to the master en-suite, taking some of that space?) and maybe a dressing room in the master bedroom.....but we can’t make the space work! Windows get in the way, or corridors look strange! We are both useless and just have no vision! Please help

you could try a very minimal intervention as shown on the attached....it gives you an en-suite to bedrooms as well as a dressing room without much disturbance to the existing structure

Hello Charlotte,

The window on the side could be blocked and bring light down from above via sun tunnels to light a dressing room space. Keep the en-suite roughly where it is as all the drainage is in place. The dressing room does not need to be a perfect rectangle, it could be doglegged around the window as an alternative.

Do you just have one daughter or other children. Perhaps she could take over the family bathroom if she is the only one using it instead of creating a cramped en-suite next to her bedroom.

How important are 4 bedrooms. Can you afford to lose one. Would that devalue the house? Perhaps the estate agent will tell you.

I'd put another set of sliding doors between the lounge and the playroom rather than a solid wall. Reason being is that it gives you more options. You get to sequester the mess and noise when you want and you still get a good flow later on when the kidlets aren't such mess monsters. I'd make both sets of sliding doors have full-length frosted glass inserts. That will let in the light. Or you could use shoji doors if that suits the decor better. From your plan, I'm assuming the house is semi-detached, so windows on the right wall aren't possible? Also, you might consider a pocket door from the hallway to the lounge and from the hallway to the utility room. That way you don't have to allow space for door swing.

I’ve been struggling to pick a color for weeks and I need to make a decision soon so hoping you can advise! I’m getting a new full wall tv unit built into my sitting room to replace an old ikea tv unit there presently, it will have presses at the bottom, space in the middle for wall mounting a tv, and shelves all around. It will come up to the ceiling and will have spotlights at the top. (sketch attached) I need to pick a color from the Farrow and Ball catalog. I’m trying to find a color that works well with what I have already. There is no other furniture in the room yet other than a couch as this is a new house and we only just moved in a couple of months ago, so I’m trying to match it to the walls, floors and the couch! I’ve attached some pictures. Our walls are supposedly Elephant Breath (but the builders used a cheaper alternative I believe). I have some purple in the room (sofa cushions and a rug). There is a large bay window on one side of the room and opposite to it a glass double door into the kitchen area. All doors, skirting boards, and coving are white. I really don’t want to pick white and would like a bit of contrast, but not sure if I should go lighter or darker than the wall. Any help really appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Thank you so much all, these are fabulous ideas, they’ve really got us excited and opened our eyes to the possibilities. I think the simpler options of dressing room within the master bedroom and en suite split into two would be perfect. As well as a teen, we have two younger children, so would like to keep two decent sized bedrooms for them too.

The layouts have really helped us to get the possibilities straight in our heads - thank you so much for your time.
