Original Edwardian tiles?

Hi!

I am trying to work out of these tile are the original ones. The house was built in 1900. All the online pictures seem to show an additional arch in tiles, where as ours are all horizontal. Any help would be much Appreciated.

Not based on any expertise (sorry) I would say it’s a later addition, so not original.

I do feel the tiles do have some age to them though.

But do you like them? That’s probably the ultimate criterium.

For what it’s worth I think it’s a lovely colour.

I am back again. I decided against the tile originally proposed as the advice here was totally right, the tile had a strong pink/salmon tone. Thanks so much to everyone. I have been searching again and attached is what I am now thinking of going for. I think this tile is very neutral, should match a lot of colours, is warm and easy to keep. It should also match a modern kitchen. Opinions please!!!

Don't be swerved away from hand painted tiles! The best way to add colour and originality (I make hand painted tiles so I may be biased). I would take the tiles to just under the bottom shelf, and up to the hod. We have had tiles behind our cooker for 21 years, and we don't find the grout staying clean a problem. By the way - I think subway tiles will look dated in a few years, as anything bang on trend tends to do.

Are Victorian Tiles suitable for a shower?

Hi, I want to use Original Style Victorian tiles in my ensuite. The area is small, so I want to run the tiles into the shower. Floor is slightly sloped to one side within the shower area, where there is a long drain, therefore the tiler said there will be no problem with laying the tiles. However, he questioned their suitability for a shower floor. I am happy with the slip rating, but concerned that water and soap, etc. may damage the tiles. Has anyone any experience with using them on a shower floor?

They are ok, it has quite a few cracks so if it was original I would try and restore them. Otherwise I think id replace the whole lot! I have 4 the same!

Do all four have no fire surround?

Yes they all have a fire surround, wooden. Here are another 2....
The 4th I know isn’t original tiles as it’s complete different tiles.

Ah, with the fire surrounds it looks very different.

In your first photo the fire surround has most probably been removed and some sort of wooden structure added.

These two certainly look original to me.

No problem.

My opinion should not be seen as conclusive though. :-)

I do feel your fireplaces can look great in a contemporary interior too.
