Best paint colours for artwork in a north facing room?

I have a small north-facing study/bedroom I'm creating as part of a new apartment layout. No "before" pictures yet, as the builder is still marking out the space! But although that room will have a reasonably sized window, it gets almost no sun, and the walls are always cold. So I'm trying to find ways to make it feel warmer and sunnier than it is.

I also have several black and white print maps of European cities which I plan to hang in there, so I'm trying to find a colour which will set off the artwork, but also bring a little warmth to the room in difficult light. A new toasted oak coloured herringbone floor will be laid in the room.

I thought maybe a yellow, but any tips or suggestions welcome!

It just has to be a warm shade. A soft yellow would be good, but my favourite is a soft creamy pink (not Barbie!) such as Farrow & Ball‘s Pink Ground:-

I know this isn't probably isn't a popular choice and isn't in line with the current (but getting hackneyed) trend for everything in every shade of grey imaginable, but I'd go for a lovely warm buttery yellow, not a harsh acid yellow. It will show off the prints beautifully and give you the much needed light and warmth in the room.

I’d opt for a yellow shade too but not one of those old fashioned colours. Perhaps something that’s more of a heritage colour.

I'm a huge fan of Farrow & Ball and their greys are lovely but if they're not working for you then why not try a different brand? The Paint Library Architectural range is very useful and they have a good range of greys in varying shades from I to V (I being the lightest) so you can use a III on the walls and I on the woodwork for a perfect tonal look. They're also grouped by undertone so they're really easy to use! Try Salt or Cotton perhaps? Zoffany also have some beautiful greys and have a similar shading system with some of their colours (quarter, half and double). In particular, I really love the Silver, Harbour Grey and Linen ranges.

I have a large rectangular living room / music room which is two rooms in one. The living room is South West Facing and the Music room is North East facing. I am thinking of painting the walls White Tie by Farrow and Ball and the skirtings and door frame Matchstick. One problem is the window frame and sills are white UPVC. The ceilings are 8ft high so have opted for a pure, brilliant white ceiling. The dado rail is going and all the furnishings will be neutral with black piano and fireplace. Twenty years ago we painted my son’s north and east facing nursery a yellow called Custard. It was a lovely rich yellow which seemed to glow in low light. Can’t remember the manufacturer though.

Our north facing wall is a dark moss, combines really well with the pine floors, desk (cabinets are white, top is pine) and offwhite trim. No warm colour, but very soothing, cozy and calm.

Personally I like yellow for hallways, not bedrooms. But a (burnt) orange accent wall would work (and a greige or offwhite on the other walls) really well with black and white artwork.

Hi Maurice,

Yellow paint colour is probably the best choice. Try LG First Light. Any darker shade may look too dark.
