Colour consultancy

I keep getting asked by customers about colour choice when pricing up their decorating work. I don't usually give advice on colours as it may lead to 'you choose the colour' type of confrontations if it doesn't go well. But I am thinking about adding this service into my business.Firstly, how much do designers charge for this? How long should the initial consultations take? And lastly, what happens if it doesn't go well?

My first question would be, what training or formal experience do you have in that field? I think it's a difficult thing to actually charge for unless you have some provable training or experience, or a real interest in interiors and design. I don't think it's as simple as just finding out what someone wants and offering them choices.

TBH I think that you could be leaving yourself wide open to a world of pain, unless you get (or employ someone with) some appropriate design training/experience/tuition/study. I don't think the fact you may have had a lot of practical experience of painting and decorating for others is enough.

Would the service you're offering have enough value in it, to actually charge someone for it? For instance, anyone who is looking for advice with paint and colours could go along to an F&B shop and get good, free simple colour and decor advice - we did.

What would you be offering over and above something like that?

Whilst I don't want to sound a Debbie downer on the idea, I think the fact that folks will be paying for a service, they may have higher expectations than those you are envisaging.

I suggest creating 2 areas in this room, one conversational at the fireplace and the other for TV viewing. Move the TV to either the wall by the curved sofa or the corner where the end table is located in the image. Something larger on the mantel about the size of the firebox opening such as the mirror over the curved sofa. The mirror over the sofa should be lowered to about 6"-8" over the couch if you leave it as is. Select different toss pillows that are textured. Find a shag carpet that is larger and carries multiple beige and brown tones. Consider replacing the coffee and end tables with glass ones or fabric covered stripes. There is nothing wrong with monochromatic you just need to add the texture to make it work. If you are craving color think one color, such as midtone blue, green or red. Use it sparingly and replace any small decor with much larger items.

Hello jkhmcd, Colours can largely depend on what you are buying appliance wise.. I always go for and suggest robust chrome.. Free standing chrome range, with Dualit toaster, it's the most beautiful toaster ever and an iconic piece of design.. and complimentary kettle .. Dualit do a nice one too called architect.. I have done a lot of consulting on what brands and best design so the dualit is an all time favourite!! I don't know what the spout is like on the kettle and you'd want to go and try it out maybe but there's a couple of my must haves.. Chrome for me makes a kitchen.. I'd move on to a chrome kitchenaid if baking is enjoyed.. For me it's on a big long list! One thing I do think is a no no... Coffee, tea and sugar canisters.. Personally I hate to see these things especially on the worktop.. .. I keep tea in the cupboard and coffee in the fridge.. Have things on show that are more functional, like a collection of wooden chopping boards, that sort of thing.. Minimal and sleek worktop keeps the kitchen looking really stylish.. Grey is a lovely colour, works with chrome and you could maybe team it with creams or darker colours if you like dark.. It's hard to suggest things here as I don't know if grey is on walls or cupboards or floor.. If you could say what is what, it's easier to advise.. For now thought... think Chrome!.. : ) )

Ask your clients to come on Houzz for wall colour guidance! It’s my favourite question “What colour should I paint my.......” and we’ve all asked that question some time or other, and it’s free....... :-)

There’s many factors to consider in choosing colours for any room, as paint colours aren’t the only colours used in a space. That is something that designers like myself offer to clients.

You can offer the service but outsource via an interior designer.
