Ideas needed on how to update hallway and stairs

As we come in the front door there are two very dated wood and glass wall partitions, one into the dining room and one at the bottom of the stairs, which does have a small radiator on it. I want to get rid of or change them but have no idea what to do. Any ideas would be most grateful.

I’m also going to get the stair walls skimmed to get rid of the artex and want to change the lighting - currently a very 70s orange light!! I was thinking a couple of spot lights would be best but open to suggestions. Also, what trade should I contact for doing this? Obviously an electrician would be needed for doing the lights but would it be a builder or joiner to fill in the hole where the current light is?

Any suggestions for a different kind of bannister would also be appreciated. The stairs are quite narrow.

First of all: https://www.assistall.co.uk/home-improvement/artexing/artex-removal/

Remove the artex because skimming it would make the staircase even narrower.

Also remove the railing before plastering/skimming the walls. New railings should probably go up a little higher.

Your partitions could be updated by replacing the glass for a single clear/satin rectangle (add new piece of post). And paint.

Probably replace the carpet too.

My stepson is a plasterer and he usually skims over artex, but yours is very textured so may be worth getting a plasterer in to advise and quote. This is something plasterers deal with daily (oh the fashion for artex in the 80s!) so they really have seen it all before. I think the wooden partition and rails can be done by a carpenter or a builder. The lighting is better sorted by an electrician. So I would start with removal of wood, fit new rail etc, sort out lighting then lastly get the walls plastered. I agree that the carpet does need updating.

Thank you for your comment, The fireplace looks so bare, originally there was a huge surround and I couldn't believe the size of the actual grate when it was all removed. I had wondered if I should have had the piece of granite hearth extended to the wall and built a narrow bookcase by the chair. I will definitely get a mantel. No tv yet, don't know where to put it,? i was going to say tapestry or a glass mirrored effect, as well haha. or just a large painting that you will love to look at. your chandelier is very nice, but i've seen many with that kind of entrance, that they have those really long, pendent lighting, for a dramatic effect. but i'm thinking, you don't want to change that. or a giant clock. or one of those wall stickers. or animal heads haha. few ie attached

I am a fan of black as a disappearing colour! If the tha bannisters were painted black the Victorian look of cast iron would fit. The walls are too pale , would you consider a dark green( FB Green Smoke) under the rail, next to the carpet, and a much lighter version above( FB Light Blue or Pale Powder). Not really sure of the shade of green in the carpet, it might be more FB Oval Room. I am fond of the Pugin look but realise it is powerful and invariably used with very dark paints. We changed our ginger brown stairs, over 3 storeys to white. 13 years later the effort was not only worth it but the pain has subsided too!

Hi, I have pine wood stairs, skirting, doors and architrave and I'm looking for some nice ideas to brighten it all up without painting the architrave , skirting and doors. That would be too much of a big job. I thought maybe cream for the walls but I'd like some bolder ideas and maybe the same cream on the instep of the stairs. Don't really know how to proceed. I'd like to show off the pine to its best. Also, it's a 3 bed bungalow so not a big mansion place, should fit the style of the house. I like a bit of black too and colour. What about pictures? Are they a bad idea? Thank you

I quite like your partitions and handrail.

Not sure of their actual quality but I wonder if there’s a way of keeping them and giving them some sort of update by painting them.

I hope some people come up with more concrete ideas.

Do you know if the glazing complies with building regs?

ED, the quality isn’t very good and I don’t know if the glazing complies or not. They were put up well before we moved in.

The carpet does need replacing too once the rest of the work is done.

I really like the wood, just re-plaster the walls, paint it all out and re cover the stairs. Its very quirky and could look fab
