can i paint old out door paving slabs, if so what paint do i used please?

Try pressure washing them first to see it you like them cleaned up. If you do want to change the look you can acid etch them or stain them- there are lots of how to videos online but basically you need to clean the slabs with a degreaser, apply your stain with a roller (or acid with a spray and 8-24 hours later a neutralizer), and then seal the finished product.
There are options at the DIY store or online- personally I would be looking to buy a combined stain and sealer designed for concrete slabs.

As Jonathan said, power wash the slabs first as you may like them but degrease, rinse and let dry before adding any colours.

Hi lots of different options and ideas going on. I had a similar wall and understand how mean it can be to little ones. I bought and put up the expanding wood trellis. This instantly covered the area at a very reasonable price. I then planted quick growing climbing plants. I'm not a great gardener so I cant remember what i had but ask at the garden centre they will advise you. But at least you have a barrier in place to minimize accidents.

A level patio area is always a good idea in a garden for somewhere to put table and chairs on. A practical path to the shed is especially useful when the grass is wet, it stops too much mud being trampled inside. Big pots on the patio filled with flowers or herbs would be a nice touch. They need to be big so the kids can't knock over them easily. Toysrus sell these rubber garden mats to put under play equipment. It has holes in them so the grass can grow through and it stops the kids turning the bit under the swing into a muddy pit. I have them at them around my kids' slide too. Our garden only had a 3 foot chain link fence around it, so I had a 6 foot wooden one put in front of it to stop the kids escaping.(this was because the neighbours owned 2 of the fences.)

Gosh, I've returned after a week travelling for work to loads more suggestions - thanks all! To respond specifically: - the house faces south so gets the lovely morning (and in the uk, sometimes the only) sun. - the husband has avoided putting plants in the planters due to maintenance and they're generally twee so comments here have confirmed to me that they will be coming out - love the idea of wooden boxes with the spiky plants and grasses - also like the concept of taking out the grass/bed/tree in front completely out and replacing with slabs - yes to lightening the windows - to the Barn company, I honestly don't mind the advice and I'd never seen sloping garage roofs. - nicking ideas from landscaping of new builds....great idea! - finally, Helen Scholes, I'm embarrassed about the spelling of kerb. Had no idea! Thanks again all.

A15) @Dara Cooke: If you can't afford a quartz or granite worktop from day one then I would recommend using a laminate worktop as a temporary solution. If you don't put tiles up as a backsplash then replacing the worktops can be relatively easy in a couple of years.
