Can’t decide on light or dark floor in bathroom

I am planning on redoing my bathroom. I think I have decided on the wall tiles which are Tekno grey from Topps Tiles which is a concrete effect tile but can’t decide on a lighter grey floor or a dark floor. Any suggestions or what do you experts think? Light or dark?

I'd go dark. I think it is always more "grounding" to have pale colours above and darker below but in your samples I think that there isn't quite enough contrast to make the mid-tone wall tile and the lighter floor tile really look their best. In fact, I actually like the two floor tile tones together best. Sorry!

I prefer the dark on the floor, but it does depend how much light you have in the room. Are you going to tile top to toe? It can make a room look very cold if you do.

There are numerous ways you can incorporate your color scheme - rug, drapery, bedding, wallpaper, etc. It depends how much you want to change or add. Going with white bedding and adding layers of colors (coverlette, pillows, shams and throw) is a good way to dress the bed. Decide if you want to paint room, have a focal wall or use wallpaper. Hi. I hope you don't mind me saying but removing one of the bathrooms may potentially devalue the property even if they are small. Removing the bath may also alienate any families when it comes to selling. Maybe check with an estate agent unless this isn't an issue for you. Have you thought about combining a bath with a really decent shower? Luxury hotels often do this. In terms of style, what is the rest of the house like? Look at the light in the room for colours, you can go dark but combine with really decent lighting. If you like blue, why not try navy and white maybe with some bright accessories? Navy is very on trend at the moment (and a classic bathroom colour!) but can't find a great bathroom image. I personally would go for something fairly classic with a couple of contemporary elements.

It small But your cabin sink unit is a good idea as you have storage space and it looks neat. I have changed my bath many times to shower unit and it has leaked every time, some times it has been the plumbers fault or bad design then it was a visitor who let the water spill while showering the last time it flooded the insurers wanted the bathroom TANKED! meaning waterproof walls and floors. This is done by an experienced plumber contractor of repute! as the insurers said too many claims from too many people with bad waterproofing. the insurer said they would not insure again or any other clients who had not got their bathroom water proofed by expert plumber fitters. SO I have gone back to the Bath with a shower enclosed and found it tops for waterproof.

Light ones on the floor for me. Most UK bathrooms are small and my concern would be having the darker one would make it look smaller.

Anything lighter than the Tekno grey? Different size too?

And could you post your bathroom please? I'd like to know it's shape (and layout).

I'm with Rinq, the wall tile is too dark. I prefer the two lighter tiles but the lighter one on the wall and the mid tone on the floor. In an ideal world, i'd probably go for a lot lighter and all over, floor and wall together to maximize on the light and space.

I'd say there is no right and wrong decision to have a light or dark floor, it comes down to the size of the room, natural light levels and personal preference. I personally think the dark tile however is quite harsh. If you are not keen on the idea of a patterned floor (another example attached) you could consider having one 'dark' wall and the other walls and floor light as in my other photograph. The lighter tiles look very nice by the way, I love the tonal variation within them.

Personally, I think you need to find a pale tile or a patterned tile (or mosaic) to go with either the concrete or darker tile. Or: At least one of the ones you've picked should be square ànd some wood/black/both should be added to break up all the greyness.

Were you planning on keeping the bath?

I quite like the floor tile, but the wall tile is still very dark. Would you not consider a lighter tile all over and matching for floors and walls. I like the flooring that's there at the moment, although I can't really tell what it is.

No plans for accent tile.

There will be a built in bath with shower screen. Wall hung vanity unit with basin in a wood effect smokey grey then a close coupled WC

I like the photo of this bathroom that you sent over Rinq. That seems to be a similar colour to the wall tile we have chosen with a dark floor. What could we do to make it less grey?

Just what you see in the photo. White vanity. Black accents. White bath. Plant (color). Playful contrast (bath niche and probably shower wall).

I could say a photographing lamp, but that's just silly..

How about the lighter floor tile on the wall and the current wall tile on the floor? If that is possible. Think the darker floor tile is too dark, but without seeing your bathroom, it's difficult to tell. If you like it, go for it.

What about using the same time on both floor and wall?
I personally prefer it as it makes the room more “together “ in my opinion and less busy, especially in a small space like a bathroom.
Toptiles have some tiles that are both wall and floor similar to the one you selected.
Maybe an option?

Hi Tommy-LEE, both the light and dark tiles you’ve shown look very good. My old bathroom, I put in dark grey whilst my bathroom now, I’ve got light grey. Both bathrooms have a lot of light and light and dark both worked well. The biggest difference for me is actually maintenance as in how dirt and watermark shows up. We’re a barefoot household with two dogs and I like to maintain almost like a 5 star hotel. Somehow light grey doesn’t show up dirt as much when we vacuum just once a week. With the dark grey tiles, I had to vacuum more frequently, which isn’t great as I work long hours during the week. Apart from the colour, the difference between the tiles is that the dark tiles we had was smooth and light one we’ve now is more concrete like with texture. That might be a reason. In addition to the look, if ongoing maintenance is something you’d like to optimise, worth taking account how the colour and texture affects it.
