Thanks for your fast reply! I'm keen to place a few mature laurels by the black gate to add some height/balance to the Japanese maple on the right side of the garden. But husband would prefer creepers not the fencing for screening. Any suggestions are most welcome.
Looks like you have a nice circular lawn, will that stay as it is? I personally am not a fan of laurel. It’s rather drab and can grow pretty tall and wide, hogging the garden, although it can be regularly trimmed to control it. How about a Photinia red robin, it’s a nice evergreen so good for creating privacy and the new leaves in the spring and summer are a lovely red.
By creepers, do you mean climbers? My favourite is the star jasmine (Trachelospurnum) which has shiny small evergreen leaves with heavenly scented white flowers. Another lovely shrub is Ceanothus which has tiny evergreen leaves and beautiful blue flowers in early summer. Clematis are fabulous climbers that scramble through other shrubs and have lovely flowers. Stunning varieties are Viva Palonia Or Jubilee. There is a vigorous Clematis Montana which flowers in spring and is great for covering fences or sheds.
i could go on, but I don’t want to feel you’re drowning in suggestions! Here’s some pics:
Thanks, really appreciate the suggestions. Yes, we are keeping the circular lawn and will return next year. I hear you on the laurels, but we don't plan to stay a long time and are looking for some partial screening near the garage gate that may have some height without years to grow. Our earlier attempts at growing Jasmine were not successful (insects appear to have got it), but love the suggestion for the evergreen leafed Ceanothus. Many thanks!
