so I made a bathroom unit and mirror!
As some of you know I like things that’s hard to get or in my case, sometimes don’t exist!
Decided the give the bathroom a quick revamp, existing bath, taps, basin and toilet all still there as they are like new and I still like them, didn’t want to spend anymore than about £500 as I’ll prob do a major revamp next year! All told I spent £350 on everything:-)
We were always stuck for storage as I never seen anything I like so after looking at a few things at silly money I decided I’ll make my own!
The mirror was cut with rounded edges and bonded to an aluminium frame I made which floats it off the wall, like the mid century feel to it with the brass mirror, the unit carcass a friend made, I ordered aluminium sheet cut to size, angled the corners and bonded to the unit, it was painted black as was the edges of the door and inch in on face so when the the door mirror was bonded it would all be black.
As a feature the door face is recessed in 5 mm from the flush face of the unit and has a 5mm gape all round....I’m well chuffed!

Comments (4)For the time being (and this IS only a temporary fix) try using a water based penetrating sealer on the grout. I stress water based, because solvent based sealers today are made to be "breatheable", meaning they allow moisture to transmit back and forth, while the water based sealers will repel water. You still need to address this in a more permanent manner (the glass door is a good idea, but it wouldn't hurt to remove the bathroom floor tile, waterproof the floor, and install a new tile floor), but this will help until you can afford to do what you need to do....See MoreNeed some ideas for my bathroom

As a pro I wonder if you could offer your thoughts on a couple of scenarios 1 - Leave bath where it is - what would be involved in moving the shower 4-6 inches to the centre of the bath? I did consider the P shaped bath and will consider your suggestion for a shorter bath to allow room for the toilet, but I currently had to put in a door stop to protect the shower door from the entrance door handle and I would be concerned about a rounded door being even closer. If I left the bath where it is I have a couple of options, turning the toilet and cistern 90 degrees to the adjoining wall - see above for the considerations there, or I have also considered switching the toilet and sink. I would put the sink facing the wall where the cistern currently is have a large-ish vanity from the base of the bath to the wall, and the if the toilet was where the sink is it would not interfere with the doors for the hot press as the seat would be considerably lower than the sink is currently thus giving me the better access I want. In this scenario the main issue for me would be the toilet would be facing the entrance door, a bit unsightly but if it gave me the space I want I think I could live with the compromise. 2 - A bit more involved, but I have also considered moving the bath sideways along the short length of the room, shower end over the space where the cistern is currently and moving the sink and toilet to the space where the bath is currently. I think this would allow me room for a vanity and maybe also a tall storage cupboard for the towels and linens currently in the hot press. The obvious concern with this is the shower spray in the direction of the hot press, if I got the storage I needed elsewhere in the bathroom I wouldn't be concerned about those getting wet, but would want to ensure I don't end up with a leak over the stairs. Access would also be an issue if repairs were required for the shower pump or the hot water system. You would have to step into the bath to gain access. Comments (6)It small But your cabin sink unit is a good idea as you have storage space and it looks neat. I have changed my bath many times to shower unit and it has leaked every time, some times it has been the plumbers fault or bad design then it was a visitor who let the water spill while showering the last time it flooded the insurers wanted the bathroom TANKED! meaning waterproof walls and floors. This is done by an experienced plumber contractor of repute! as the insurers said too many claims from too many people with bad waterproofing. the insurer said they would not insure again or any other clients who had not got their bathroom water proofed by expert plumber fitters. Comments (5)If it was me, I would centre it and only silicone the back. I understand your concerns about water going down the side. Realistically, though, as you will only be washing your hands and maybe teeth in it, there is unlikely to be much water gushing about. To detract from the fact there is not as much space on either side of sink, I would have carpenter either wall mount or put legs on the cabinet so there is space underneath and the unit doesn't look too chunky!...See MoreSonia

4 years agoHi @minnie, it will be a take on this one! It would be far too much work to get the bench curved tile the pic but it will have a similar look! Don’t tank it will be that expensive tbh, I’m guessing @£300

the frame I made was out of aluminium right angle, it could be made from steel angle as well, to totally simplify, you could just make a rectangle out of say, 30mm square wood, glue it to the rear of the mirror (have the back plastic wrapped for safety and so any mastic/doesn’t react with mirror back and then paint it the same colour of your wall, remember it’s only to float it off the wall, it will sit back about 30mm back from the edge of the mirror so can’t easily be seen! drill and wall plug 2 long screws into the wall (horizontally level) and leave them protruding about 25mm then hang your framed backed mirror on them,not a great pic but you can see my frame here, this can’t be seen from the front or side due it’s position,
So a wooden frame would be very simple and effective, all you need is a glass supplier to cut and edge your mirror exactly as you want it then make your floating frame to suit :-)

bespoke does not always have to cost a fortune, all in this cost me @£60 to make! That’s the finished product inc the mirror cut and edged!,
the mirror is actually a brass/ rose gold, I love the final effect of the colour
