My only comment would be to think carefully about how many spots you actually need and what you would use them for. All to easy to turn the space into a football stadium.

I know.. and am totally with you. I'm trying to get the balance between enough so that there's enough light and no dark corners, but not soo many that its just a landing strip that costs a heap to install...

As I said the bf isn't keen on pendants everywhere as he thinks it makes the ceiling look cluttered, hence the compromise of pendants over the island, and in the dining room (which for others could be easily turned back into a living room)

But spots else where.. with additional lamps as I probably wouldn't have the spots on in the evening in the living room! lol it's a balancing act

If he had his way, there would only be spots everywhere in the house!!

We have just bought a house and the renovation plans are coming together nicely, but the kitchen and sitting room area have me stumped! I love modern, open plan design, so I want to join the both areas to create a big family friendly space. The balcony is a fantastic feature of the house, so I'm thinking bifold doors the length of the kitchen to let in light and join the indoor & outdoor space. But that leaves very little options as far as I can see for placement of the kitchen cabinets. I have attached the floor plan of the relevant level of the house. Can anyone give me some brilliant ideas?

I can perfectly understand that you don't want an additional door off the hall, and do you really want to approach the utility with washing etc, through a hall anyway? I just wonder why you want to make the door disappear, when its not on a wall with units? If it were, it might be easy to paint it/finish it similar to cabinets, but in the middle of the wall it will stand out anyway, whatever you do. To my mind, it might be better to just put an ordinary door in there, similar to other interior ones or glass paneled if you wan the light. If you are going to do it out with similar units to kitchen, it will flow in any case, if you can see them. Several friends have done this lately and it looks fine and the continuity through the glass paneled door just seems to make the kitchen appear even larger and lighter.

Loads of options as you basically have a black canvas. I love a rich teal, or dark turquoise. You could also consider wine or pink, or indeed red, but careful of tones

Hmmm. I would argue that spots also clutter the ceiling.

Wall lights (up and down lighters) are a good option for getting a good spread of light. Corners are best lit with standard or table lamps ... a good idea here is to get 5 amp sockets fitted so they can be turned on and off with wall switches.

Yea, I was imagining having lamps in the corners of the living room.

Is that the main advantage of 5 amp sockets? (being turned on and off with wall switches?) presumably other things can't be plugged into them though?

That’s right. The socket is three round pins as opposed to three square pins so you can’t accidentally plug the wrong thing in (unless your daft enough to put a round pin plug on it of course!)

You can have multiple of them on the same circuit and as all the lamps are connected together you can use it to create a lighting scheme that’s controllable via a single wall switch. Also gives the possibility of have a dimmer switch too.

I agree with you Maths wife

The table is about 180 extending to 250cm and where as 1 is probably enough when not extended I wondered if we’d benefit from the second when it is... but definitely need to look at placement! I also worry if I try and reduce it to 1 then the boy will want additional spots as he uses the table extended lots for massive board game things... lol

I haven't looked at your plans but only read your post. It all sounds too much to me. In my current kitchen, previous owner installed, we have one light pendant which is always used. I have under unit lights, never switched on once! I alphabet a pendant in dining room next door. So in my new kitchen/diner (2 rooms joined together) I plan to have pendant, 2 over dining table and 2 over island. No spotlights- I really don't like them. We will have lots of natural daylight though. If you will have natural daylight I would reconsider .

Everyone's house has different light levels. I don't have a pendant light in my kitchen area, andI wouldn't want one. I don't like anything but spots in a kitchen as they get dirty easily and spots have cleaner lines. I have 5 spots plus over and under cupboard lights. I use all of them plus the hood light on the cooker constantly as our kitchen can be quite dark, due to it being North facing and low ceilings. ( Very old cottage ) .

Re the dining room, yes absolutely you could have two pendants, it will look great.

Yea, need to have a careful think as you say Maths wife! I was hoping to have units along the all opposite the door! Which would then risk the table being pushed slightly off centre.. but don't want it to look weird, as aware that others may use it as a separate living area! and don't want massively off centre lights! (also slightly annoyingly I think one will need to move about 20cm to the side lol!)

I think part of my confusion (with the kitchen) is that in our current kitchen ( slightly smaller than the new one) we have 8 spots! and still have a corner thats dark when you're working in it! (but I think that's more due to poor placement) but the electrician only quoted for 6, which again I think will leave a dark corner near the utility.

I also want them to line up with the living room area, so if we ever opened it up more and took out the double sliding doors, it doesn't look silly! lol so much to consider! (I realise they're not quite lined up in that plan)

@Space Cat, it's definitely not something we'd considered! so thank you for giving us another option! I think we're going to stick to normal plugs as we often put the lamps on timers.. and move things around etc. :-)
