help! quick low budget ideas

Heya

So we are planning on doing our garden with a designer in the near future, possibly next year. However, our garden is full of the fastest growing weeds so we are thinking of grassing it (can’t stand faux) however, I still want a nice garden and really stuck for ideas. I really would love a seating area and a somewhere for the kids to play temporarily. Any ideas where we can position it and also quick ideas for making garden manageable until we have saved enough for it to be done properly?

Looks like quite a challenge! For now I think it makes sense to keep the main patio in the middle and use this as a seating area. For other areas, as a temporary solution and to prevent weeds from growing I would perhaps treat them with glyphosate weed killer or pull up as many weeds as poss providing it’s dry weather leave for a few days to work then cover with a weed proof membrane then on top of that use bark chips. Bark chips are ideal because you can use these at a later stage for flower beds, borders and so on..plus it’s safe for kids to play on. For a grassed area I’d perhaps use the area in the left but the soil will need some work first. Rotivate the soil (churn it up) pull as many weeds out as poss, then use a soil rake to even it out and remove stones. Put some top soil on, rake again then you could either sow grass seeds or lay turf rolls, either way it would need watering daily and can’t be stepped on for a few weeks. Hope this helps:)

Hi, can you draw a rough plan of the garden as it currently is please? Also, how old are your children and what kind of playing space do they need? Eg, if they’re toddlers / pre-school age, the patio may be best for them for ride-on toys / sand-water tray, drawing on the slabs with chalks, etc. Grass is great for play but not necessarily accessible all year round if it gets muddy. A little bit more info would be useful.

Hello the days are brightening up by now and I'm sure the room is looking less drab for it. However I think furniture rearranging will work wonders. You seem to have nice low window sills: show them off. If the sofa goes to the left between window and built-in unit you'll have a view out to the garden and more light in the room. Equally: can you fit the piano between the radiator and the double doors? Again: more light through the window. Low sills are a god-send, and so many of us are stuck with high ones. The room will feel more spacious with a good view to outdoors. The armchairs then: one to the left of the fireplace and one between the other window and piano. TV then between the two windows. (No shine on the screen) Does that fit maybe? Or do you need all five seats facing the TV? I rather like those stripy cushions. Can you find a striped wallpaper in matching colors and with an irregular pattern repeat for your accent wall? if going with wood floors how about a sheepskin rug for each of your doggies? Black or white. One last detail. A lower table for your side lamps would be good: At sofa arm or seat height. Coffee table could work in corner between window and new sofa position. Btw: I liked the suggestion to replace the cupboard doors above the fish tank with full-height ones. In some kitchen shops you can find ready-painted, wooden, panel doors that might fit. It's a long shot but you could be lucky. It would brighten up the corner if you got a light colour.

I second Carolyn's motion to check out IKEA for a media cabinet although I feel you will need something around 30-36" tall with this particular TV. It appears to me that you have two matching loveseats or small sofas. Is this correct? In any scenario, if you want cozy, several have already offered thoughts that will help. First, although ideal, I do not feel that your cocktail table has to center on both upholstered pieces. You could center it on the fireplace and work from there, whether parallel or perpendicular. I agree that the upholstery needs to come forward and that the two large pieces should create an L formation. the chair should go to the left of the fireplace, at an angle. I know: Now it is partially in front of the TV. If the TV is on an appropriately scaled media piece, this allows TV viewing over the chair back from all seats in the room except the chair. At risk of being presumptuous, I would suggest that the TV need not be visible from EVERY seat in the room. Greys are definitely hot right now and I love them, but choose wisely. Greys combined with this intense red and black can plunge you squarely back into the 80's. Consider very warm greys, mocha's or green-greys. When you land your color, paint the walls, out onto the underside of the tray and onto the front facing edge of the tray all the same color. This will enhance the architecture of the tray and unify it as an architectural UNIT, enhancing the volume and dimensionality of this feature. As for the pale blue, I must say, I don't understand that at all in this room. (No offense mforr) Now, add a texture to the highest central section of ceiling. Think, grass cloth, faux finish or just a deeper version of the wall color. I agree with Carolyn that the panels are covering too much of your window and that you should consider losing the tie-backs, which are a bit cutesy. In a perfect world, or if you are up for it, I would replace them with something visually lighter, something with a large open airy pattern. I would make the cocktail table metal and glass or wood and glass and modern, even sculptural. (maybe a Noguchi repro?...) Large scaled art on the long wall, as suggested earlier and some greenery. You have a great foundation on which to build. Good Luck!

There are several ways to visually widen a narrow hall and shorten a long hall. Floor: To widen a narrow hall use a diagonal floor treatment, e.g. stencil large diamond pattern on floor. To shorten the hall, use two or three runners to break up the length of floor rather than one long runner. Walls: Long walls can appear shorter by breaking up the horizontal lines.. This can be done by arranging pictures in groups rather than distributing them along the length of the wall. Hang a large painting, print or tapestry on the end wall or paint your door an accent color to create a feature. Another way to shorten a wall is create vertical sections on the wall. Trim can be used to create panels, groupings of art can create sections or large objects such as a mirror can define the segments. Directed lighting illuminating these section will also de-emphasize the length of walls. Ceiling: Minimize the visual impact of a long hall by bringing attention to the ceiling. One approach is to align the panel wall sections with ceiling panels or coffers. Or hang interesting pendant lights or a bold chandelier to redirect visual interest away from the walls.

Adding width BEHIND THE BED - with a headboard (which doesn't have to be a "headboard"; it could be fabric, collection of mirrors, collection of pictures, a farm gate!, small chairs or stools) across the entire width. Matching bedside tables/bookcases/chests/ with LAMPS - useful storage for extra books, extra bedding, etc. CURTAINS always warm up a room. People will always feel colder away from home - provide an extra blanket or duvet to add to the bed. I notice there is no WARDROBE. Not really necessary for overnight guests (provide hooks on the back of the door) but useful for storing your out-of-season coats, etc. There is plenty of room behind the door. Buy one on eBay and paint it to suit your colour scheme.

Just as a temporary measure. I'd do more clearing.

Move the shed to the corner where the fence and ground are most uneven to hide that corner. You can always put trellising around it at a later date. Patio & paths to stay where they are. Planting area around the tree on the right instead of the grass around it.

Clear everything out of the raised beds at the rear, but leave the walls in situ.

Grass area to the left in front of the raised beds.

Remove the planter and broken raised bed at the bottom.
