pen plan kitchen living room design question. room for island?

grateful for help with design ideas, plans attached for open plan kitchen living room diner We cannot visualise whether there is space for an island, we thought at bedroom end of kitchen possibly, but also need space as well for dining table and sofas. the room at the back labelled bedroom 3 will have sliding pocket door and serve as snug/ extra seating and guest room. At the other end will be bifolds to the garden. thank you

Hi Graham,

When in doubt, it's always helpful to use masking tape on the floor to visualize the actual size of an item of furniture or in your case, a kitchen island. A standard kitchen worktop is 60 in depth and usually (as best practice) 120 cm is left between a kitchen worktop and a kitchen island. The reason for that is to provide free movement if there are 2 people cooking in the kitchen at the same time (but also if one of them is opening an oven door, for example, and therefore needs more space to back up to do so easily).

In order to help you visualize, I've marked in red the kitchen worktop depth and kitchen island. However, I've left around 90 – 100 cm between the two as some people actually prefer it that way. In green would be a standard/smaller two-seat sofa. As you can see, if you wish to have sofas and a dining area in the same room, there isn't much space left if you wish to add a kitchen island. I don't know the requirements of your project but from what I can see from the plan, the kitchen should be more than enough to cover the basic needs.

I'm sorry, but I don't think that the space between the kitchen and the island as Detail Movement Interiors marked it out, is 90-100 cm. It seems to be much more than that.

100 cm between Island and counter is enough. Even 90 cm would work.

Could you post the internal dimensions of the lounge/kitchen?

Hi amfork, I went ahead & put the hob on my island & am delighted I did. I find it really is so much nicer looking out at the kids/my husband & being able to chat to them while I prepare meals as opposed to facing the wall with my back turned on everyone. I put a 4 ring induction hob on the island & put a 5 ring gas hob on counter facing wall. I did this as I have a large extended family & we frequently have get togethers. It’s great for catering for big events. However, I use the 4 ring induction hob on a daily basis. Hope this helps! Best of luck with your project, Claire

Hi minnie101, Thanks so much for your detailed reply. Great to know what colour that grey is. It may be a little dark with our floor. We will definitely update the handles - I hate the current ones. We'll probably go with wood to keep within budget. Your non-tiles pic is lovely. We'll probably keep some tiles and try to keep the kitchen a little more modern than country kitchen, which might be a challenge with wood. The room faces south. I like your idea of dividing it with paint. We probably will go with white in the kitchen and then 1/2 slightly darker tones in the tv-couch area. The 'other' entrance into the dining area is narrowed by a non-structural wall, so we should remove this to open it properly or like you say, close it off. Maybe not close it off entirely as we'd lose a lot of light, but maybe put in a counter or breakfast bar if space allowed. I love your pendant light suggestions over the dining table. Details like this and a rug in the couch area will really help divide the room as at the moment it is one big cavernous space. I really can't decide yet what way the couches should face - into a tv in the corner, or out into the room like you suggest. We'll have to draw out some chalk outlines on the floor and see how much space there actually is. Colour-wise we like the idea of keeping walls and cabinets quite stark, the wood counter will add a bit of warmth, and then adding colour with couches, rugs and possibly dining chairs. I've attached a couple of pieces of furniture I like. Some may not work, but we'll figure it out.

I love the tall units but you need to go straight to the ceiling to prevent dust and dirt settling on the top. I would put a row of small up and over cupboards along the very top as an option. Very handy for unsightly bulky items. I don't like the end open shelves by sink very dated but what you could do is a long double shelf all the way along the island with a wine racking either side for balance vertically. I think shelving each side of the sink would be better. You have a lot of cupboards but no deep drawers which are highly valued these days. Good selling point. I Like your colour suggestions... The little Greene paint company have a lovely grey so does farrow and ball. Where are you sourcing your Quartz and what flooring? Do your ovens have easy open shelf doors ..handy as they retract so don't get in the way as you take food out..Neff offer best ones. If you want a better balance of tall you could always do fridge freezer one side and pull out pantry on the other with racking. Then on sink side don't go all the way along the wall just have it as centred space so you can pull out larder doors. On your island you will need your bin as this'll be prep area? What is the room opposite tall cupboards? Need the island to look good from that side as that is what you will see. Hope of help. I'm embarking on the same thing and have spent hours and hours researching!

can that wall be remover between kitchen and table? if so could you put a narrow island in kitchen with a table/counter running off of it into current dining area. this would be alot narrower and allow for more storage unser the window plus open up ypur living space more. also furniture is very dark for a small space and table and chairs seem very big. could you paint ceiling white and light fixture a brighter colour.. all these things should make it seem bigger. the picture i have attached would be quitw narrow and just an idea i saw on houzz.

Hi Carolina, what I've marked down was just an indicative. I've marked in yellow the 60cm module and moved it to show the space. It could very well work out to be 110cm. You are correct that is shows more than that.

Regardless of that, the best thing to do would be to check dimensions on site and of course, contact the help of an architect or interior designer for space planning, if that is what the owner wishes to do.
