Floor tile design help

Hi everyone,

We are currently refurbishing the whole downstairs and I am worried the tiles I've selected might be a bit too mix & matchy and won't tie in well together.

For our small hallway and downstairs WC I am thinking of a Victorian patterned tile (like this - black on white or something in navy, but am conscious of too much blue! ) the living room will be painted a dark navy with dark wood effect tiles (living room tiles) and the kitchen we are looking for a stone effect to go with our navy and white shaker kitchen (kitchen)

I have also attached a floor plan of the downstairs, which doesn't show the downstairs WC yet.

Any advise would be hugely appreciated as we have to buy the tiles fairly soon.

The victorian with navy goes really well with the wood effect tile. Pick the same wood effect for your kitchen. Pick the navy (or other colors) from the tile for your walls.

Thank you!! That's very helpful! Do you think if I have the stone tiles in the kitchen but wood in the living room it would be too mismatched? Should kitchen and living room be the same floor?

How are we feeling about that stone in the living room??

Hi catbox/emerald18 - your kitchen is absolutely stunning - I love it - mostly because your style is the same as mine - only the tiles I've chosen are Henley Cool from Topps Tiles (sage green/blue). I've also had a few moments of indecision but I've had a picture and sample of the tiles pinned up for months and I still love them. I'd chosen matt slab style kitchen door fronts but I might be convinced by your photo to change to Shaker. I am also going for the wood worktop but can't decide whether to have a Belfast sink or not. What sink did you choose? I also can't decide on a splashback, but like white painted brick + something more cleanable by the sink and hob. Once again, I love love love your kitchen - I'm pinning the photo of it up with my tiles picture in case I get future wobbles about my dream kitchen

100% Wood. I actually am installing for the second time wood flooring in my kitchen and dining area in fact the whole first floor. I did the second floor in Brazilian Cherry and just love it so much more than the oak that I currently have. However if I had to choose I would choose the oak floors over tile every time. They wear better look so much prettier. And like the previous poster pointed out I hate dirty grout lines.

Hi ! I think this house will benefit from from plenty of toy storage in the main family living space ( assuming this will be in the extension at rear ) as while little ones are so small they need to be in view - so perhaps you could design with this in mind and add a dedicated laundry room near the WC perhaps ? The current play room could maybe be used as a different function ? Do you need a guest room /study perhaps ? For when family members come to stay ? If so maybe the wc could be upgraded to a shower room ? There's lots of things you can do to make this work for you - just write a list of what could make your life easier now and for the next 5-10 years or so ... Some things will evolve or be ready to change by then - so being clever with your designing and planning now should put you in a good place further down the line too !! If this is something you need help with - hiring in a pro might be a good way of dealing with it - or alternatively put your wish list on here and see if you can get some fab ideas from the helpful Houzzers !!!

Of course you could have stone in the kitchen (do you have a photo of your cabinets and countertop?), it's your house! ;) But my personal preference would be just wood+pattern, since I don't think a stone look will flow with the patterned ones.

If you'd rather have the stone for your kitchen (not use it in the living!), perhaps there's another patterned tile for your hall?

Excellent choice in my view. I love Victorian tiles and they would look stunning, whatever colour you choose. I think the wood effect living room tiles would look fab in the kitchen too with a blue kitchen, but the large beige tiles would also look good. I just feel wood effect would look cosier. Here’s a pic showing wood effect tiles with a navy kitchen.
