Best finishes for bathroom taps? Help!

I am remodelling my bathroom and I love shiny golden finishes on taps and showers, but I wonder if these are durable. I live in a hardwater area and am rather clumsy so I want to avoid limescale buildup and chips! I know chrome is durable and easy to clean but I really don’t like the look of it. What finishes can you recommend that have the gold look but are easy to maintain, and hold up with time?

I see lots of styles I like on sites such as victoriaplum and victorianplumbing.co.uk but does anyone know if brands such as Lenor, Deva, Bristan, Tre Mercati, and others on those sites are actual quality? I don’t want them to start leaking and falling apart in a year!

It's not so much who makes them, but how they're made that matters. Don't buy anything other than quarter turn taps. These are a newer design and cut out the old fashioned washer approach.

I'd look on Trust Pilot at the company selling them and see what others have said.

I have recently had a year long battle with Franke after purchasing a very expensive sink, which is not fit for purpose. A lot of the companies these days hide behind the 'guaranteed against manufacturing defects for 5 years' etc..............however, this means that if you can't prove it was made incorrectly in the first place, then you'll have to bin it and start again.

I would encourage you to read very carefully their small print. Had I looked on Trust Pilot and seen how bad the reviews were for Franke, I would have never purchased it.

Same for Bensons for Beds ( another tail ).

I can however recommend Burlington, their customer service has been excellent!

Re: black granite------ I'm not a pro or anything, but we put a home depot grade black granite as our vanity top in a bathroom and the spots and finger prints do drive me crazy, and I'm the last person to call a neat freak. It never seems clean. I was recently at floor and decor looking at granite (dreaming of finishing a basement) and saw a honed black granite that looked really nice if your heart is set on black. I've seen that (honed black) in a kitchen in a luxury home and it looks extremely nice. It's a bit more expensive, but worth considering if choosing between black granites. Personally, I'm more of a marble fan and have marble in the kitchen. It's more high maintenance (meaning, you just have to use common sense and not treat it like you did in college). I've also owned a home with silestone and that is one durable and tough stone.

My understanding: You didn't find any problem functionally, but you feel this looks old & need some brightness & change in this. My advise: 1). Remove towel rod, shift it next to tub or behind closet & have full length mirror, which will make your space double & reflect natural light as well thus makes the space more bright. 2). Get couple of plants (small plants or bush type or creepers which doesn't occupy much space on floor but grows vertically). 3). Get some artifacts made from bright colored glass, can flower vase or wall hangings or glass tiles etc, these can be of yellow or Bright Orange color these are to be hung on walls opp to mirror or pasted(3M tape both side glued) if you are using tiles. 4). Get a mat of same color as artifacts & place between tub & closet. these all are easily done by yourself. OR if you can afford to then replace only green tiles & floor tiles if you wish to OR all tiles.

Hi guys, Leelee we are definitely doing the vintage bits on the wall. We actually have some vintage cereal boxes that we are planning on displaying on the shelves (filled with cereal of course)!. Sarainitaly - I'm investigating thenIkea planner but it's painful to work (or maybe it's just me!). Here's a pic of the walls totally painted green now. Think the shelves will look great along with some pictures dotted around. It's the cabinets now that will b a pain! BTW it was pure enthusiasm that stopped me waiting until the water heater came off the wall to paint - lol. I will have to paint the patch when it's off.

Marie - my advice is not what you want to hear but I'd go for chrome or if you prefer a less shiny look - brushed chrome or brushed nickel. There are a lot of trending finishes around (brass, copper, gold,etc) but I really don't think the finishes will last, especially with the amount of cleaning taps need in a hard water area. I have a Vado tap which has been great and would recommend spending on a decent brand.
