I bought a house with parterre designed for low maintenance. I’d like to fill and edge the purple slate areas with planting that won’t root or seed in the gravel and keeps the shape of the pattern. All thoughts welcome. Currently box and ballerina soft pink roses
Are you looking to keep it low maintenance? If so consider keeping the slate and adding tall architectural plants such as phormium. Alternatively you could turf those areas for low maintenance. But personally I would try to emulate the formality of the other borders with euonymus. There are lots of varieties of euonymus- I would choose something golden or variegated to contrast with the box. I love to see whole boarders of euonymus cut with square edges like box or trimmed into bulbous ball shapes. Alternatively you could add a complimenting plant to the interiors such as lavender. I am also loving hostas at the moment.
Good thoughts Jonathan! I agree something structural in each one edged and either stone in middle or lavender - lovely. I’d not thought hostas before. Thought they might loose the shape definition though as they get bigger.....
Ooh, how lovely! Not often you see a parterre. Agree with Jonathan, really depends how much time you can spend maintaining it. You generally see them filled with bedding plants in blocks of colour with the purpose of when you look at it from a distance you see the overall pattern however they’re usually replanted regularly by a team of gardeners. I think lavender would be great option and offer a lovely contrast to the roses. I thought this was a nice modern take on a parterre although not as formal https://www.andysturgeon.com/gardens/modern-parterre/ Or you could go crazy with topiary:-) Here’s some inspiration images.
If you’re in the south east of the UK, please take some preventative action against Box Hedge Caterpillars. They have pretty much decimated 10 box plants in our garden in a matter of a week.
