how to make dinning area brighter

Hello houzzers, I need your advice please. In trying to brighten the dinning area (pictures attached) and will appreciate your advice and suggestions. My living room is a through lounge with dinning area sandwiched between living sitting area and kitchen(flat roof) at the back. There is no direct light source to the dining area
The ideas ideas I have to make the room bright are as follows;

Repaint the living room walls white or similar?
We are changing dinning table as it is semi broken ( pls see new table pic below)
Introduce sky/roof light in our existing kitchen flat roof. Part of flat roof is leaking so it's been suggested to replace roof with fiber glass as thats more durable. Apologise for the mess.
Im a novice to all this building works and repairs so I will appreciate any advice and suggestions you can give.Thanks in advance. pic1- view from living room sitting area with curtains up. pic 2- view from kitchen with sliding door opened. pic 3 - view from kitchen with sliding doors closed. pic 4 -dinnig table and chairs we are purchasing.

Hi Priscilla,

I would fight the urge to paint the room white and fight the nature of the room. I firmly believe a light room should be kept light and a dark room, dark - that we way we avoid it looking flat and lifeless. Now, the room looks like it doesn't have an abundance of natural light, so I would suggest that you might want to consider a darker hue. What do you think? I love F&B Inchyra Blue which contrasts nicely with crisp white woodwork and ceiling (F&B all white, for instance). I would keep the living room and kitchen bright though. Try a few samples and see how they look throughout the day in different lights. Don't be afraid to use stronger colours! they will make your room look so much more interesting and bold! alternatively, you may opt for "one colour" throughout to create a flow among the three rooms: living, dining and kitchen. I would suggest something like F&B Lamp Room Grey.

It looks a good size room but what struck me was not the lack of light but the lack of colour. Everything looks brown, the floor, the sofa, the dining chairs, the curtains...I think the room would look much brighter if you introduced some colour. Think about a rug, some cushions, maybe a brightly coloured bowl on the new table (love your choice of new table). Good luck!

I agree with everything said so far. Would suggest you get built in book shelvers on both sides of fireplace, lift tv into a slot it fits perfectly into (make sure you have power on both sides). Then it will disappear more rather than fight with fireplace as focal point. I am always disappointed with mirrors over fireplaces, they become dark, are to high to reflect much. Plus then you have three rectangles fighting for center stage. I'd say very colorful artwork instead. Wonder if you can reorient tv where the big chairs are so both tv and fireplace are addressed? Color, maybe you should decide on furniture first?

Just a quick note to thank you all for sharing your thought, ideas, experience and time. I especially want to thank Bluenan and decoenthusiaste for being with me through the all process for the last 6 months or so..., just wanted to post few photos of the results (https://www.houzz.com/discussions/any-ideas-for-final-touches-to-this-living-dinning-room-dsvw-vd~569586) as I feel it is not only me who created this space but it is your creations as much as mine. It may not be perfect or according to the the "Rules", but it is Me and my family. Each and every piece was chosen by me in different parts of the world and each one of them has a unique story behind. I am very pleased with my space. I love it! I am very blessed. .... and so I am off to my new project now... Back to school.... that's really going to be hard ;) Thank you all, once again.

If you are going to do this - make sure the bedrooms have plenty of wardrobe space etc - don't scrimp ! Ideally every woman wants at least double the wardrobe space she already has !! And a walk-in wardrobe / dressing room is something that would earn any developer brownie points !! So if you have the space ... Use it well !! Breakfast areas in morning sunshine work well and evening sun in the lounge is good - inside outside fireplaces can work really well and everybody needs storage for summer /winter stuff (ski /scuba /suitcases etc ) so worth adding in storage somewhere accessible (like utility room ) for that sort of gear too ! This is an awesome opportunity for you ! Have fun !!!

Hello Edele, Well one way to maximise space is to reconsider the appliance aspect. So for example you could have a free standing range oven.. which will have hob and oven in 1 piece. This could give you much more space to play with, so possibly you might want a double height fridge, which would be best placed to go at the other end.. The other thing you could easily do is take out those shelves above the worktop and instead have a row of shelving on the rear wall.. Then you could have a row of cabinets all along the top. This gives a slightly different feel to the kitchen, making it more streamlined but also potentially offering you more storage space.. Re positioning the cabinets and painting them can also achieve a new look whilst using what you have.. Replacing the handles with touch/open mechanism hinges on the inside also gives the cupboards a really stylish appearance and nickel or brass (depending on colour of cabinet door) cup handle for the drawers... . If you were to take away the armchair.. you may be able to move along the table a little, add two chair to the head of the table to seat 6 and then at the other end on the far wall (where I suggested some shelving) have a butchers block or table for additional food prep... It could have wheels so you could use it when dining for serving and so forth.. : ))
