Remove plastic panels...

Does anyone know if it would be possible and how difficult/costly to remove and then brick up where the plastic (I'm assuming it's just plastic?!) Panels are on these windows. Im guessing I could clad over them but I'm not much of a fan of cladding and at the moment there is so much draft that blows through these sections of 'wall' I'd much rather if was gone. Any help would be much appreciated

Bricking them up is the most expensive solution.
I suspect that internally there is just a stud wall that could be removed, gaps for drafts sealed, insulation added and then new plasterboard

If you want custom cream panelling built from scratch, it is likely to take you more than three weeks to line up a contractor, get it built and then painted. If you want to use beadboard (thin, lightweight, cheap) you can do it yourself if you are good at the small precision cuts around the wood window trim and behind the radiators. You can get a custom built wood cover with doors for your tv or use the painting over tv disguise made with hinges. I think the room is beautiful as it is. Spend some money on a truly beautiful, impressive chandelier, have it centered over the table. If you want to impress relatives at an event, the chandelier is the way to go. Clean the windows for extra sparkle. If you are in the US, try Home Decorators http://www.homedecorators.com for DVD storage cabinets that are closed. I would not get a rug for this room unless I was ready to get it cleaned frequently and I could find one that looked good with dog hair on it and did not show stains. A good quality, highly patterned wool Oriental rug will do that job nicely. Such a rug is an investment and may take longer than three weeks to find.

I would use plants to brighten the space. The hardscapes are all good, they just look a bit naked and grim. It can be hard to make a space pretty but usable for the kids too, but its not impossible. You have a lovely sitting area to enjoy. Plant some lovely feature bushes in that gravel area. You don't need to completely hide the clothesline, but having something pretty and showy in front will create a boundary and the eye will be drawn to the plants instead of the washing. If you can't plant into the soil there, some large size pots will work. Maybe some medium sized (1-2metre) ornamental trees in pots, like citrus, a weeping ornamental cherry, or bay trees, moptop robinias are nice too. They will be compact. You could cluster some pots of herbs underneath or plant them and let them ramble a little. Herbs like thyme and rosemary and lavender will suit the gravel area and the heat and be hardy with kids playing around, the odd bike falling on them or crushing underfoot would be quite okay. bulbs in pots or planted around the edges of the lawn are great value low maintenance and hardy colour. You can get great seasonal variation in your view then. Online bulb stores like tesselar and garden express sell bulk landscaping bulbs at very reasonable prices. You can get hundreds of bulbs for $30-50. Bulbs are great hardy plants that won't be killed by the odd soccer ball either. The flowers may get knocked over or the leaves, but the bulb is safe under the soil. Cheap and cheerfuls like nasturtiums are good value colour that will self seed every season. Also, plant some very bright flowering shrubs behind the soccer net and against the far wall. Maybe some hibiscus? You need something to catch and entice the eye, plant some large flowering shrubs with larger or bright flowers or foliage you will be able to appreciate from a distance.

Hello mn0304, I think it looks very nice!! Don't really see institution at all... Some foliage and large pots for decoration or with Olive trees between the windows would be lovely... Difficult to see what type of windows they are.. Sash and wood would mean they could be painted a nice colour.. I'd suggest a granite or dark green.. If they are upvc with a grid design between two panes as I have just come across with another person I offered suggestions to.. then that's a bit tricky.. I don't have any experience with upvc but I do know of products that allow you to paint onto plastic.. Can't see the front door to offer any suggestions here.. but if you can't paint the windows I would think of two bays at the front door... and some lovely large stone pots between the side windows.. You could also carry the large pot idea down the side of the drive at intervals.. This one is terracotta but you can also find faux.... Then more money for roof! :))

Thanks so much, this is going to sound like a dumb question but what are these panels called? I've tried googling solutions but can't seem to find anything that looks like them anywhere!!
