Dining Rooms Design Dilemma Living Rooms

Help with furniture sizes

Been starting to think about furniture sizes for our open space area:
- Dining: We are thinking of a 160cm/95cm table. Then have 2 seats at each end. Is this size sufficient for the space or should we have a 180 table instead? My husband wants the 160 but I’m thinking it might be small for the space.
- Lounge: debating 2 options - having L-type with an angle on the right or having a 3 seater (~206 I think) then including a standalone seat. I’m not sure what size this seat should be and if we have enough space. We like lounging around by the TV but maybe having the L-type might take up a lot of room.
- I would like a small “landing” spot for mails etc. not really sure where to put this..

Would love to hear our thoughts!

The only problem you really have is that there is no provision for a coffee table or end tables as there isn't really enough room. You need walk space of around a metre around everything.

You may choose not to have a rug, as it is really the 'main' walk through from front to back , so it could easily get quite dirty, although it does look quite bare without one.

Here's an alternative, which segregates the living area better and diverts the walk area through the middle of the room.

I made the sofa 225cm x 225cm to close the gap of the walk through area, preserve the rug, and give you more seating.

Yellows/creams/ whites/ and grays are very fresh right now. The gray can range from light silver to charcoal, but it won't take away from bright and airy feel, because it really makes the yellows and creams stand out.

No, ask away :-) I'm not a pro though, just kind of passionate about design and interiors and all that :-) Great cabinet. I'm really not opposed to mixing metals. You'll get a more eclectic mix. It is the result of going with what you love and not with what you think goes with something else. And that will give your interior your own personal style. Matter of taste. Some people really don't like it. Others do :-) Go for a fairly large coffee table. I would think at least 100 cm wide. Tape (news) paper together to the size of the coffee table you like and lay that on the floor. It will give you an idea about the scale in your room. You need it to be easily reachable from the sofas, since you have these high armrests. And your room can take a large table. If you can't find a large one you like, you can also think about putting together 4 smaller square ones for example. The one with the metal base (I took two from the Soul Lifestyle site) is on the smallish side. The black one is larger. Round fits nicely with the shape of your sofas. Not sure if I mocked up the sizes correctly, but I think the lovely side table is too small. The lamp is about 70 cm tall (again, I guestimated the size), but it does look small on that low table. Hi Joan, I think your measurements on the top plan must be incorrect. You have the larger figure at the top 19ft 7" and the smaller at the bottom 12ft 7" ( plus maybe another 3ft for the stairs ). However the smaller measurement must be at the top as the bottom is biggest.

Had a rough guess at what it might be instead:-

Thanks again! It’s good to see that the L-type would work. Re the walk through, we will have sliding doors instead of bi-fold doors and we will have it open on the dining side. In your drawing, you used a round table. Will that give more room for walking? We thought initially that round tables took up more room than the rectangular ones.

I don't think round takes up more room than rectangular necessarily, depends on the size of the table. I think is was more from the design perspective in that the round table takes your eye off the slanted wall and makes a good walk way around things.

Just down to personal preference.

Oh got it! We were thinking of a 160x95 table. In your other photo, it looks like you used 225x125. Not sure if I understood correctly but does that mean the 160x95 is too small for the space?

Hi Joan, I think your choice of 160 x 95 will work. It all depends really on how many people you want to seat and how much room you would all like. You can take a longer table. I wouldn't go over the 225cm in total. Ours measures 185 x 100 and comfortably seats 6.
